Geez, this has come up a number of times before, but never with the kind of passion I see here!

I have several of both -- I prefer maple.

Each to their own mate. I have both and like them for different reasons.
When I'm ready for the American Deluxe Tele in aged cherry burst, it will be a maple fretboard. :)

I've always liked rosewood, but coming from a flamenco background I prefer ebony if I can get it. That was why I bought an ultra in '92. I can't really say if the darker woods produce a "darker" tone, but the tighter grain and harder wood make for a very dependable playing surface.

I come from a classical background, and prefer ebony for the same reason. It feels right.

Hey I thank you all for your input.
My current strat is a 91 with a maple neck and I love that guitar.
Thanks J

maple feels better with my fingers. however, this issue should also be seen from individual perspectives. we can't just give our opinion and force others to accept our thoughts.

Hi -

I recently acquired an American Standard with maple fretboard -- love it! As to maintaining the fretboard, what is the recommended care for maple? I'm coming up on my first string change, and all my other guitars have rosewood boards.

Can't say myself what the truth is about sound, and the effect that the fretboard has, but I do have a prefrence, and a reason.

I like maple for the look, and, more importantly, the feel.
For some reason the fact that I can feel the woodgrain on the Rosewood boards slightly bothers me. I mean, I can play with either, but the totally smooth feel of the Maple board is preferable to me. The grain of the rosewood seems to slow down my fingers just a bit, and cause a slight amount of extra friction when moving about the fretboard.

I could see someone liking, or even loving the feel of the woodgrain, though.

Anyone else have an opinion on this? (Feel of woodgrain)

I agree with you. I have rosewood on mine, but having played rosewood for years, Im starting to get g a s for a maple neck strat. My maple neck tele is the definition of perfect for me.

I have a rosewood Stratocaster and a maple Telecaster. I could tell them apart in the dark but not because of tone (obviously) or type of wood. The frets are different, for one thing. I just don't think that fretboard wood makes any real difference.

The fretboards do feel different between a tele and a strat. I posted about that a month or so back and was told to be quiet, and that there isnt a differance between the 2. Regardless, I notice it to, not the tone, but the feel.

Hi thewood1987: nobody should be told to be quiet on this Forum - that doesn't sound nice, does it?

I've just had a look back through your posts and can't seem to find the thread you're refering to. I did find this one:

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/ ... ht=#273605

Is that the one you have in mind? It's about possible differences between Tele and Strat necks, but nobody tells you to be quiet on it. Different views, but no rudeness that I could see...

Anyhow: all views are welcome. If you're told to be quiet, pay no attention.

Cheers - C

Ceri,
I am impressed by your familiarity with this forum and guitars in general.
You are right, every one here deserves respect. I may have exaggerated a tad.

No worries. I didn't like the idea of someone being told to shut up, and was ready to rush in all guns blazing in your defence!

And now I'm exaggerating, of course. But it's a nice friendly forum, isn't it? We certainly want to keep it that way. Lotta nice people round here doing just that.

Cheers man - C
