both Clapton Strat and Buddy Guy Strat have 25db midboost, so what's the difference between the two midboost? is there any difference at all?

They are identical. But remember, only the American Guy Strat has the boost.

also gold lace sensors which it seems most clapton devotees vastly prefer over vintage noiseless pickups.

hmm...i was debating whether I should swap out the noiseless for lace...but isnt lace a little more humbucker-like?
I don't think I'll be able to tell much difference with my current skill level :) maybe I'll start tweaking around with it once I get confident with my playing and conditioning

The vintage noiseless are a pickup of many facets. Sometimes i love mine, sometimes i hate em. Its either adoration or loathing with me and them, no middle ground. Buddy is a big EC fan himself and its well discussed on the forum that EC doesnt have his guitars the way fender sell em to us. Unfortunately i've no experience with lace golds, but i can tell you the VN's give some very thick and thin sounds.

I just put Lace Hot Golds in my 08 MIA strat with the clapton boost and it sounds better than the clapton sig with VN's. Clapton never should have stopped using the Laces.. they just have so much more character than the VN's. Lace golds and Hot Golds are true single coils that are noise reduced not a stacked humbucker like the VN's, HN's and SCN's

Some people believe EC didn't want to give up the Lace sensors. He still has at least one left in the collection. You can see him playing it at the Royal Albert Hall in the Cream reunion DVD.

I must say i've been on a right merry dance modding the circuit of my vn/midboost guitar. Not to sound like clapton just to tame certain aspects of the treble response.

I played the original a few times, but never had the money when one became available. Saw one in Pewter hanging in a shop a couple of years ago. They wanted just $750. I didn't have it at the time.

Back in 1990, when I was getting my First real Amp (Fender Deluxe 85) there was one of the first EC models hanging there in the Music Shop. Ash Body with a Transparent Grey Ash Stain on it. It had the roller nut, locking Machine heads, and I think the Lace Sensors on it. That's still the guitar of my Dreams. The One That Got Away.

I had a Clapton Strat with LS and a Clapton Strat with the VN. Neither set would be my first choice. However, I found the LS full and rich with nice sustain as opposed to the VN which I found just plain anemic. On the upside, the VN were indeed, quieter. Obviously, YMMV.

I read an article where they were interviewing Clapton's tech and personal sound man. This was right after Clapton switched over to the VN. The interviewer got onto the whole LS vs. VN thing. The response was, he knows exactly what kind of sound EC demands and so, he board EQs in order to get it due to the various guitars EC uses. He went on to say that as far as EC was concerned, he really didn't care what the pickups were in his guitars as long as they were quiet and produced his expected sound.
