Just saw several pickguards on ebay made of rosewood and cherry. Any comments on how these might effect tone? They look pretty cool.

It "might" make it a bit warmer sounding. Whether that's good or bad is personal preference.

There's a point where too warm starts meaning muddy sounding and flubby.

Many years ago I thought that a rosewood pickguard would look cool on a certain guitar of mine. I didn't have the option of a real wood pickguard, but I did buy a "faux rosewood" plastic pickguard. It didn't look good as it wore, so a couple years later I put a white pickguard on it.

I'd be very nervous about a pickguard made of wood, especially hard woods.

Wouldnt it be more likely to chip, warp or crack?

I agree ... That would be my only concern.

I just cant see how the pickguard will affect tone
Cheers

Hi muramasa674: if your ears can tell a difference between pickguard materials - well then you've got better ears than me! If it is a look you like, go with it.

BTW: there's a world full of jazz archtops and such out there that have ebony pickguards without seeming to suffer warping and chipping. Like these, for instance:

http://benedetto-guitars.com/bobs-boutique.php

(I can see a rosewood PG on that page too.) Or check out this one:

That's a fun website! Beat me baby, eight to the bar...!

Cheers - C

I actually thought about the warping too, it seems like a real risk with wood. I don't think it would make any meaningful changes to the tone either.
