Hello everybody,

I want to ask you about some problems i have with my strat. I think they are not so serious, or i hope so , but i would appreciate your help. It's a 2008 Am. Std Strat in Sienna with Rosewood fingerboard bought in June
and taken great care of.

1.Today I cleaned and restrung her and i noticed on the 1st 2nd and 3rd fret something like scratches under the first and second string. They are not no deep. How can I erase them ? I tried with metal wool but nothing. I think i doesn't affect the string but i would like to erase them.

2.I noticed that the bolts of the bridge saddles have a bit of rust on them. Should it be like that. I wipe my guitar every single time i play and clean it so i didn't expect sth like that. Can I clean it or change it? Should I? It really doesn't affect my tone either. Also the saddles are a little bit scratched where the string passes .Normal ?

3.The third problem is that she's got some special powers. After changing the strings today, I played SRV's Lenny and i was totally lost !!! I was improvising on it for about 1 and a half hour, and when my phone rang I felt like waking up from a very heavy sleep !!! I think she's gonna make me loose all my friends, quit my job etc... With every note she was thanking me for taking care of her. She is my love.

Thanks for reading and for the help in advance.
Greetings from Greece.

I can only comment on #3
Dude, trust me. No matter how much you want to, don't pick up your guitar in the morning before you go to work.
For some reason I keep making this mistake over and over, but they just call to me.

Are the scratches on the string or on the fret? After you've played with the same strings for awhile I've noticed the little grooves that form on the skinnier strings on mine too. It just means it's time for a fresh set of strings. In fact, on my acoustic guitar I use coated strings. And I've worn the coating off in the places that contact the frets.

I don't know about the rust, but the little grooves the strings make in the saddle are perfectly normal and unavoidable.

Same thing happens to me. SRV stayed up all night writting it, I stayed up all night learning it. I had just gotten it down pretty good and jammed with it a while, then looked over at my clock and it was like four in the morning or something. It's like when you pick up a good book and start reading and can't stop, only better.

Thanks TGS

Yes i'm sorry, my mistake , the scratches are on the frets. they are like hit from the string in this place. As if the string was very hardly pushed on the fret and left a mark
WHAT IS IT ???
IS SHE GONNA DIE ???

Oh OK. I guess scratches on the frets are normal, but if it gets too deep (to the point where it starts effecting the playability of the guitar) then you can fix the problem by getting it refretted. SRV had to constantly get his guitars refretted because he just mauled it and he used such heavy strings. But for us normal human beings, you don't really need to get it refretted for years and years and years.
On a couple of my guitars I have similar scratches to the ones you're describing, but I've never run into any problems playing because of them.

Unless the scratches are causing problems with the sound or playability don't worry about them. Frets are wear items.. Use 'em till there's nothing left then have them replaced.

The only real problem is # 3. Momentary loss of time, AKA "the zone" or "Guitar Heaven". This can cause problems with school/work, friends, and significant others. As long as you explain this condition to everyone concerned, and let them know it can strike at any time, everyone should be accepting of the behavior (except school/work). Enjoy "the zone" as not too many people get there very often. Keep playing. :)

Sure is a beauty that one.

To me it sounds like its held up superbly well so far.

I remember you posting pics when you got that guitar/amp. I bought an Ibanez Prestige RG2550Z a while after you got your strat.

It now has multiple paint chips on the body due to the frankly pathetically week paint, all the dark cosmo has rubbed off the top of most of the saddles and the corner where my hand sometimes rests, all other metalwork is tarnished (including the whammy bar), the smoke mirror pickguard is totally opaque from scratches (not just from pick, but from my very short finger nails around the selector switch and vol/tone knobs!!)

This is a Japan-made "Prestige", that also had an £80 setup and fretdress. and has only been used very gently in a spare bedroom. Very careful wipe down after EVERY play with a microfibre etc. It deteriorates if you just look at the thing.

People may tell you "its meant to be played", but I know how it feels. I HATE my Ibanez now even though it plays great. Wear is fine. But wear to this extent is just laughable. Could have bought a used one and saved hundreds.

BUT: To me, yours sounds as though its doign great if they are your only issues. And annoyingly proves that I should have trusted my instincts and gone for the Oly White Am Std Strat I original ordered. (But No, my occasional need for "metal" made me get the RG.....Sob Sob)

Now apologise for hurting your strats feelings. Give it a hug.... 8)

Hi Everybody,

No , no paint chips, dings or however else you call it. Just this little rust and the signs on the frets. So you think it's expected ? Great. I think i played this guitar every single day since june for at least one hour, except one week that i was on holidays, including gigs. Thanx for the quick reply. Anyway to cure these frets by myself ???

people shouldn't be afraid of using a little 3-in-1 oil on the saddle adjustment screws to keep em from rusting too.

I think my 94 strat is nearing time for a fret job, last time I changed the strings I was actually surprised at how much fret wear i had.

Guys another question

If i replace the saddles with original fenders again, do i void the antique value on it. I mean is it a problem that they are not going to be the saddles my guitar came with ? And what if i put the graph tech saddles or sth else ?
