Hi wl7coe: nice pic! Would you tell us about the archtop as well, please?

One thing, if I remember right the MG speaker cab doesn't have the white piping round the edge. Hardly matters, I know - but it would be kind of a shame, wouldn't it? I'd check out the timber it is made of as well; I'm sure it is inferior to the AVT. Others can advise you much better on the speakers (the bit that actually matters, after all).

Good luck - and turn that thing down, will ya? I can hear you from here ('bout 6000 miles)!

:D - C

One other thing to try is-
If your after a straight fronted cab for increased bass response, you would do better to put your cabs on the floor, perhaps with some isolation carpeting underneath. Marshall angled cabs are designed to project treble from their angled section. Tilting the cab back will enhance this.
MG cabs are nowhere near as good as AVT's. Marshall do a new line called the MC thats seems great value for the money, better than either the AVT or MG.

Nikininja -> thanks for the vid on the MC412, yes I knew about em just they were not the same size as the AVT412.. (Also hard to get them shipped to Alaska with out a ton of $$$$) . First time I heard them on a vid so thank you... But ya know I may look around up here for a straight set.. (BTW I can get a 1960B for $796 up here I jsut did not want to spend that much base don my current skill level)

Ceri -> I fell in love with archtops last year.. The JZ-2 sounds great unplugged as well plugged in. I have not played it since getting the Fenders though, our local fender shop told me to sell the JZ-2 but you know the acustic and jazz sounds that come from it are worth keeping it around till I play better. Also the workman ship for a $800 guitar is awsome.. The shop I bought it from even did a great setup job on it for me.

Hands down the Tele I just purchased has got to be the best out of all em I have.. If I were to have one it would be the tele.. Being new to guiatrs I have been buying different models and trying them out, for now these are my three to stick with... the Strat, JZ-2 and the Tele .

I was wondering if anyone played a Strat through a Marshal VS100R Combo Amp or any Valvestate amps. What are you feelings on the tones it produces and what kinds of music do you play out of it?

I play with an old Marshall 3210 or 3310 head, called a MOSFET 100 (referring to the solid-state construction), with 100 watts of power. I still use it because the thing is indestructible. I have had it since 1987. I like it for rock and blues. It has the "Marshall roar" sound when cranked. I primarily use the Clean channel with a DigiTech 300 pedal. I play thru a half stack with only two 10" speakers. I liked the distortion channel, but I' m not a distortion hound.

Basically the Marshall is too loud. The Combo Fender Stage lead is similar in wattage but is a little better in the clean channel. When I was playing rock, this amp's distortion channel doesn't cut it. I still use it for gospel music. So i bought this Marshall for under $500 new. Lately I have used it without effects and it is a whole new experience for me. Besides me, there are some who like it:

I am now looking for a tube amp, probably a Fender SuperSonic. My early testing shows this is a flexible amp more suited in size and sound for all kinds of music, especially smooth jazz. :?

Hey qblue

I noticed your signature says that you have a 1984 gibson L6-s. Did you mean a 1974? They stopped making the l6-s around 1980 or 81, so it can't be a 1984???

Just curious

Also, how do you like it? I hear they may be the most underrated gibson ever

I bought it in 1984. I haven't dated it yet, but it is one of my jewels in my guitar collection. The pickups are not the typical Gibson humbucker, but Bill Lawrence Super humbuckers and a 6-way Varitone switch similar to Lucille or the Alex Lifeson inspired ES-355 guitars. I was shocked to see the same bridge on the Lifeson ES-355, as on the L6-S. It also has a 2 octave neck (24 frets, as on an SG). I paid about $200; I saw some on ebay for about $1000. It is a great guitar and I used it for rock; I don't think I'll sell it soon.

My other Gibson ES-347 (bought new in 1993, but made in 1990) has the same hardware as Lucille, but with f-holes and Dirty fingers pickups (no Varitone, but coil splitter on the humbuckers). At the time I bought these I knew little about the guitars , except they sounded good and felt good in my hands. I am proud that these guitars have held their value. I don't know the value of the ES-347, but for what they are charging for a new ES-335 I know I could get almost that amount~$4000

Both guitars are in the junkheap of discontinued guitars that for corporate reasons will never be reproduced. :!: I am more of a Fender guy now (mostly due to cost of the Gibsons), but for the type of music I play, I will play the axe best suited for the occasion.

A Fender Strat through a Marshall Valvestate? No, not if I can possibly help it, but do what you like. ;)
