Thats pretty much the way it is here. Construction is absolutely dead. Theres a powerstation being built 15 miles from me (which i class as backgarden work being so close). The main contractor has specified 'no british labour', in favour of european labour. Despite Gordon (charlie) Browns promise of 'british jobs for british workers'
The plaster/plaster cast, situation sounds much like it was here some 30 odd years ago. British craftsmen priced themselves out of the market. Their high prices led to premade cove, cornice and ceiling roses. Limiting range options but making the effects available for everyone. I learnt 'casting' when i was 11 from my dad, i started pouring into molds, then progressed to making molds. When i was 18 my incle came from australia to teach me 'on site' forming of cove and cornice.
All in all its a nice skill to have. But i'm lucky to have one contract a year. Not i hasten to add through any kind of reccesion, theres just no call for it anymore. Thats why the plaster carpentry and drywall are my bread and meat.

niki,
There was always a call for it in New Orleans due to the prevalance of old houses and people trying to restore them or just upkeep them. And there were never enough craftsmen to go around.
Now, after Katrina and Gustav, the call for people with your skills is deafening.
If you have a notion to explore this further, let me know. I still have contacts in construction in the area.

'Zactly, that was my plan! Two-Lane Blacktop. Maybe our heros would win the guitar and maybe they wouldn't. But there'd be a story in it either way...

By the way, fellas, I was slow on the uptake on certain points on this thread, but I was right about one thing. Orville's eyes are pretty sharp, aren't they?

Niki, my brother-in-law is in a similar line to you. Last six months have seen him go from skilled craftsman to minicab driver to pay the mortgage. He's currently looking at well-paid building work in Dubai. It's "Auf Wiedersehen Pet" all over again.

Still, if you know how to make moulds from RTV rubber then there's always a sideline waiting for you casting guitar bodies and necks from transparent resin. Probably a silly idea - but a fun one...

Cheers - C

EDIT: Dorky typing..

Do you agree that the truss rod nut seems to be in the wrong place to be vintage? The hole around it looks rough, too, I've not seen that before.

Yeah it is a little too low and rough around the edges. The pen ink looks very fresh also. Could it be that the con artists have developed some sort of conscience and dont want to rip off dealers/experts so they only use photographs from fake vintage guitars. Or are they just not as clever as you O.O. Whats your take on the excessive wear above the 21st fret?

Mmm, I'm just not too sure. I've been measuring the screw placings on those various heels we're looking at against their own width - and I'd be hard pressed to say.

Remember, tdanb2003 says he thinks he saw this guitar for sale on Ebay back in November as a legit '57 with an opening price of $17,000 (though that sounds low if it's a 100 percenter, doesn't it?).

So either it's real or quite seperately someone else got rooked on that sale.

One thing's clear: the current "vendors" don't possess that guitar. This sale is a scam.

Which brings me to the other point. As of this moment (Saturday afternoon in the UK) that ad is still up. Ad-Mart have completely ignored my communication. Anyone in my country have an idea where we go with that issue from here? I find this kind of filthy now: I want to sort it.

Cheers - C

Well we need to petition admart then dont we. If we as a forum message admart individualy they must surely take notice.

Yor right Ceri. It stinks now, the humour element is long gone.

Ha! Better still: get Ceri's wife on the case. Within minutes she's dug up a list of people to contact, including the police's internet fraud department and Crime Stoppers.

Interestingly, Ad-Mart list some similar options on this page:

http://www.ad-mart.co.uk/modules.php?mo ... s&pg=scams

On that page they come over as all hot and alert regarding fraud. And yet they have so far not responded to my communications or acted upon them.

For all we know it might be a tiny one man company run from a laptop somewhere. No matter: they have legal obligations.

I shall email them again giving till Monday morning (the office may be closed over the weekend) to act on the matter, and threaten a list of people I'll talk to if they don't.

Now the Missus is on it the only way is forward!

Cheers - C

PS Uh-oh: just noticed on their "about us" page that Ad-Mart are based in Australia. Hmmm...

You see that a lot on real vintage guitars. I don't know the cause of it, though. Picking is a good conjecture. I was going to take some pictures for demonstration, but haven't gotten to it.

You also sometimes see grooves where the strings would have been pressed into the wood at the end of the fretboard.

Here's the start of such wear on an otherwise clean old neck

And another

no need you can see just whats causing it. It is the strings being pressed down somewhere above the pickups and maybe exposing a weak point in the lacquer around the edge of the fingerboard.

Also the written dates on those necks as well as the truss adjust screw do look quite different to the 57 in question. notably the inclusion of the builder/finishers initials. Not a huge thing i know.

Also notice the wear on the bass edge of the fingerboard?
That's gotta be caused by the low E string falling off of the fingerboard!
A common malady on the old guys, as we know

I would say that "scam" of a "1957" Strat was a 1957 Reissue that was reliced (and date marked) to try to pass it off as real.

Ceri's got his missus on the case. The con-artists days are numbered if shes anything like mine. Only a grizzly life of oppression and torment can possibly await them now. She'll see they get the labour camp, or the birch.
