For a Stratocaster the scale length remains the same at 25 1/2 inches. You just have a longer fretboard by two frets. Unfortunately the 24th fret would sit over the bridge pickup cavity. So you either have to give up the bridge pickup or rout the pickup cavities elsewhere.

Warmoth actually sells 24-fret after market necks that you can just pop into a Stratocaster body. Major overhang. And, of course, you have to pull out the bridge pickup. Gotta be very ugly. I suppose you could get a pickguard that would cover up the hole better.

Um. No. The distance between the nut and bridge would be the same, and only changes with a different neck scale: 24.75" or 25.5," the extra frets are added to the top end of the neck, as pointed out above. The first fret wouldn't be any further away from the bridge than on a Standard Strat or LP.

I also have little need for 24 frets. That's what the whammy bar is for! ;-)

I've never enquired but I feel I remember a Forum member saying Warmoth sell the required pickguard, with no neck pickup position.

***

Interesting debate to be had on the pickup postition issue. It is normally said that a Strat's neck pickup is placed at exactly three quarters the scale length to take advantage of pleasant overtones at that spot (the 24th fret position). However, as mentioned above, that calculation will change the moment you fret a string, so...

Also, ZZDoc told us about a Johnny Hiland Sig PRS he had, which has 24 frets. He said PRS told him the neck pickup was designed specifically to compensate for not being in that three-quarter-scale-length position. And if anyone would do such a thing it would surely be Paul Reed Smith.

But then, as soon as the strings are fretted all of that goes out the window anyway. So what the heck is the "pickup at three quarter scale length - or not" issue all about, really?

Any thoughts?

Cheers - C

(EDITED: to correct myself - I'd written half scale length when I meant three quarter. Dope!)

Don`t be so serious , it was a joke. I know the distance is the same.

Actually, I'm in the Mid-Hudson Valley, and work in Westchester County. I'm only about an hour out of Manhattan. I can't recall where Delaware county is in relation to me. I think it's a bit further north, and west.

Cheers! :)

Here is an idea, maybe they do not make a 24 because most of their other companies do.
Fender owns (or the parent company) Jackson, Charvel, EVH, and Gretsch.

Might just be overkill.

Just a thought.

And of course Warmoth has a very nice web page discussion on the 24 fret extension fingerboard option.

Check it out.

Quote:
The trade-off is the neck pickup... That's right, to keep the intonation correct, the extra frets must move towards the bridge and the neck pickup is smack in the middle of the way. Another issue concerning 24 fret replacement necks is that of access to those extra frets with YOUR fingers. Can you reach from that body indent to the end of the fret board?

Gosh, thank you - but actually not. Far as that pickup position is concerned, I'm asking questions, not giving answers. Wish I knew all about it - but I don't!

Cheers - C

Oooops! Sorry, soggycrow!

I thought the post before mine was by Ceri!
