i built my first "black strat" and used a set of Tonerider pups. they are used but sound great, except the top E and A string are really quiet compared to the rest of the strings. i tried pickup height but it dint help. what could be causing this? is it possable to have a bad pickup that only effects 1 or 2 strings volume?

Patience grasshopper.

Sounds to me like you just need to adjust your pickup height. Do a search on the Forum for "Nickel Method".

If you post in the pickup and accessories forum you might get a quicker answer. A poster named Martian seems to be well versed in this area. Good luck! :)
