Hi Strat lovers,
I have a question about texmex pick ups? what are the difference between these and the normal strat pick ups, having read all the advertising about the new road worn strats it states that they are super charged with texmexs, any ideas?
Cheers

They are good. With a hot vintage vibe. I got a lot of really great tones out the Roadworn that I test drove the other day. Very responsive to pick attack.

But if you are thinking about retrofitting a set to your Strat I would hold out for something from the Custom Shop.

I really love mine. They do everything from heavy to clean very well. They have lots of tonal variations. It really makes all five positions of the pickup selector drastically different (unlike my MIM Std's original ceramics which are perfectly decent pickups, but the tonal range is significantly more narrow). Similar to every other single coil, though, they definitely do not crunch metal like a humbucker. Overall, I think they are tremendous, especially when you consider the price point. I know there is a little stigma due to the "mex" association, and the fact they are "regular Fender" (not Fender CS) pups. Anyway, just my opinion...

I agree!

I am also owner of a set custom shop Texas Specials Pu´s, in all my strats the Tex Mex sounding better.

like bigjay said, but I don't see them as inferior, just a less hot. both give a nice punchy bluesy vibe, but the tonal characteristics are a bit different.

the texas Specials were designed to emulate SRV's old pickups. The TexMex are featured in his brother Jimmy Vaughan's model. That's actually not a bad way to describe em either. Texas Specials, think punchy hot Stevie ray vaughan sound, While Texmex are more fabulous thunderbirds.

Juxtaposing Stevie and his coat-tail riding brother is actually a great analogy for the Texas Specials and the TexMex pups.

Nobody should complain about Jimmy, but you would pay more to see Stevie.

Nobody would know about Jimmy, if it wasnt for Stevie.

How did Jimmy get a signature strat, anyway? He has the best single note solo's I've ever heard.

OK. Im done poking fun.
The fabulous thunderbirds were pretty big in their own right. :P

I also liked the Thunderbirds. Jimmie Vaughan is a great player and he's still going.
