Some frets seem to have less sustain than others, is uneven sustain between frets normal?

well i dont know the answer to your question, but ive noticed im lacking alot of sustain when i player higher notes for some reason, it could be my gear. its mostly set up for very high output pickups which are on my other guitars. i tried doing some tweaking on my effects board and amp but im not getting any better results

I wanted more sustain so I got a Boss Compression Sustainer. It gave me the sustain I was looking for along with a side affect I didn`t want, hum and static through the amp. I had to get a Noise Supressor to quiet it down. The higher frets don`t seem to hold the note as long which was why I got the effect pedal in the first place. Its like an addiction, one pedal leads to another.

If your noticing a lack of sustain on upper frets it could be caused by the pickups being too high.
Uneven sustain across the fretboard could be a trussrod/action adjustment issue or a symptom of thr frets needing polishing. Thats a worst case scenario it could just be a setup issue. Its hard to tell without hands on examination.

I think it has more to do with the area of the neck, than the frets.

For instance, there's a natural "dead spot" right around the 10th fret. Trying fretting an F# on the A string and it usually won't sustain long on any guitar.

There's a more detailed, eloquent explanation of this, and I've read about it before (mainly regarding acoustic guitars) but I'm too lazy to look it up.

Dgonz, that also is another possibility. Sadly a lot harder to sort out than a fret polish. You may get somewhere by polishing the hell out of the neck but I think it would be very labour intensive for little reward. You could try a groovetubes fatfinger, its said to alleviate dead spots and improve sustain. I've got one i wasnt initially too impressed. the differences i noticed were minimal to negligible when i first put it on. When i took the fatfinger off then struck a open string and quickly put it against the headstock then took it off again i did hear a tonal difference. It enhances more than it alters. I use mine as a clamp to clamp a callaham sustain block onto the headstock of my tele now. All that extra mass does give a noticable difference.
It could be well worth you checking out, but be warned its effect is subtle.
