If I were you I'd be just as focused on a great amp as you are on a great guitar. When I started out I got a Roland Micro Cube, which beat the snot out of the Squier amp that came with my guitar. Squier does make some nice guitars though, I'd suggest buying the amp separately and getting either a standard series Squier or one of the new Classic Vibes (I've played one and I was blown away). Or better yet a Standard Series Fender, used they can be as cheap as a new Squier. As far as a Strat or a Tele goes, it really your choice, they both rock. I've found the strat to be more versatile and less bright and twangy sounding then a tele. It's also more comfortable to play, but either way you can't go wrong.

What about a second-hand MIM or Highway One? The better you can get at this stage, the more it will help your playing in the long run and you won't have to upgrade in the near future. (One of) The great thing about Strats is you can always upgrade pretty much anything at a later date so potentially you have a friend for life! Good luck

Well bec, you'll probably have to have both someday! I mean, Sheryl Crow plays a Tele as does Avril Lavigne but a Strat is also its own reward.

Buy the first one that calls to you (you may hear a voice in your head-if it says "Take a butcher knife and...." ignore it-wrong voice) and then later buy the other one! Those who own both instruments are spiritually fulfilled and at peace with the universe! ;)

Welcome to the world of searching for your first guitar. Where I was a few weeks ago, before one of my friends let me play his Strat. The contouring makes it easier to play, and also makes the guitar lighter. Plus, the three pickups allow for more sonic variety!

How much is .02 American Dollars worth in Australia?

Rebecca,
I don't know what Strats sell for in your country but 500 Aussie converts to about 338 US. I would put the money into a good used Mexican or Japanese Strat. and worry about the amp later. Stay away from the "Starter packs". Go ahead and get a better guitar now. Your playing ability will progress much quicker on a better made guitar and if you decide not to stick with it you can probably sell it for at least as much as you have in it.

Good luck and when you do get it don't forget to post pictures here so we can ooh and aww over it...
welcome... :D

Hi Rebecca! I've had a Squier Standard Stratocaster and a Roland MicroCube amp for over a year, and I am very happy with the set-up.

for a start an used MIM or MIJ are excelent instruments. The best thing i must say go to a local music store (if they got one or both instruments) and play with both. Don´t take the first chance...once you play with both you will know wich one is the right one. the Tele and the Strat are very diferent, and each one got his own "mojo", so the best thing to do is play with both.
good luck with that...

I would suggest either the standard tele or strat... both are nice guitars for their price... :)
