I just asked this question the other day. As recommended here, I bought some Schallers and they were totally compatible with the Fender hardware. Just attach strip and put on the guitar. DONE. NO MODS.

Schallers, absolutely. I have a very basic leather strap from Musician's Friend, after about two months the bottom hole was stretched enough where it came off a few times while playing. I put the Schallers on, no problems since. I now have them on both my Tele and Strat. I kept the original strap buttons for if I ever want to switch back, but I don't see that happening.

Is it my imagination or did my American Deluxe Telecaster come with the Schaller buttons installed? My wife has a MIM Strat that has flared strap buttons, as does my son's Squire Strat. My Tele has buttons that seem just like the ones in the Musician's Friend image. It looks like I could buy the parts for my strap and just lock it on!

Its not your imagination. The buttons on my 1999 American Standard Tele are exactly the same as the Schaller buttons. I have the same ones on my 1997 American Strat.

Stock Fender hardware.

A couple with the Schaller installed. You can see where the strap lock slides over the button and locks into place on the center of the button. Sorry my start got in the way a little.

I dropped the buttons that came with the strap locks into my parts bin.

+1 here. Only problem i'm facing right now is that the screws on my les paul are much larger and won't fit in the schaller button holes! :(

When holes get stripped in the wood, I have heard of people (and myself) using toothpicks, putting them into the holes with a little glue, and then installing the new screws. I have done this on lighter guitars and never had problems before. Of course I have never done it with an expensive guitar like a Gibson, but concept should be the same. Just an idea

Fender has installed Schallers on numerous models for many years... I've got Strats from the 80's and 90's that came with them.

Fender also sells them in their own (Fender branded) accessory line... and typically they sell for a couple of dollars less in the stores/on-lines than the packages with the Schaller name on them... However, they are the exact same pieces.
