I just got back from Guitar Center looking for strap locks. I have the Eric Clapton strat, and I am hesitant to make any hardware mods to it. However, all of the strap locks they had required changing the nuts on the guitar. Is there any way around that? and if not, which ones would you recommend?

Thanks,
Martin

What nuts are you talking about. I use strap locks, I have for years. In fact I just put a new set on my Fender HWY 1 today and put the old set on my ESP. For Dunlop or Schaller locking devises it should be a matter of removing the old screws and strap holders and replacing them with the new ones. Then putting the locks on the straps. I do know there are other brands that are different...but you shouldn't need to change any nuts or bolts. :?

Get the Schaller [Fender/schaller] strap locks they are TOTALLY compatible with fenders and you wont do any mod whatsoever to the guitar .. you just have to unscrew and screw again thats it! :)

I'm sure "nut" was the wrong term for that. I was talking about the posts that the straps attach to.

Thanks for the replys.

I'ts a simple swap, but if you're worried about making a mod, just hang on to the originals. You can always screw them back on.

I'm using the Grolsch bottle washers. Cheap, and you get beer!!!!! I'm just learning, so I don't exactly move a whole lot, but they seem to be holding pretty tight. Thought I saw the same setup on David Gilmour's guitar, in an interview picture. Couldn't quite tell, but the red color is a bit of a giveaway.

I use Dunlop Straplocks on all my electrics. I had tried the Schaller locks, but they wouldn't fit properly on wide leather straps - especially the Fender Deluxe Wide Leather Strap

The Dunlop ones work fine on my 2 wide leather straps and on the Fender strap that came with my VG Strat.

I don't mind that the Dunlops stick out a little more - they seem to work quite well - but I don't do any wild playing/jumping, so what do I know. :P

To the best of my knowledge, ANY strap lock is going to require changing the buttons that the strap actually goes over...that's how strap locks work. Personally I'd go with the Shaller's myself (and have) and then put the originals in a zip lock baggie and stuff them in your case in case you ever find the need to "restore" it.

Think of it this way; which would you rather do change two simple little screws with the buttons or have your precious ax come off the strap, hit the floor and possibly leave a major ding in the body (or worse)? I know some folks get really anally retentive about keeping everything original, but unless you are going to lock the instrument in a hermetically sealed box for posterity, then practical thinking should rule here. Some parts on a guitar...strap buttons, knobs, even the nut, etc., are not THAT big a deal, especially on a new guitar. If we were talking about something like a genuine vintage '57 Strat or something...an instrument that's 30 or 40 years old, then to some degree I could see it. In this case however we're talking about a newer Eric Clapton Sig Series. When that instrument is actually 30 or 40 years old and -if- it's worth any collectible value, then maybe it will be time to worry about something silly like chaning the strap buttons, but if you are actually going to be playing now, just change the darn things and enjoy the security of knowing your instrument isn't going to fall off. It's a guitar...you're (presumably) a guitar player...set the thing up the way -you- like it and don't worry about the rest.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim[/i]

I use Dunlop Strap Locs. In fact, I'll be ordering a couple more sets for two other guitars I play a lot. I just prefer them to the Schallers.

Thank you for all the input. I know its silly to not want to change them - its my own little psycosis. I tend to like the dunlop asthetic, so I think I will go with them.

I'm a Dunlop strack lock fan. I had one disaster with one of my first basses (it's ok, only an Ibanez beater  ) but after that it's one of the first things I do when I get any guitar.

Piece of mind in my opinion.

I like Schaller's best, I've never had one mess up on me.

My Ibaneaz guitaer was my 'hard lesson' too!

Don't learn the hard way, especially given the quality of your instrument.

Trust us you want strap locks.
