It's hard to pinpoint some of the older guitars by the serial # on the neck. When CBS ended it's affiliation with Fender, some of the serial # decals were stored, only to be used at a later date. For example, I have a gunmetalblue Tele that I bought brand new in February of 1989. It has a serial # of E324367, which would be a 1983 guitar. A better determination would be the stamp on the neck. The neck on my tele is stamped 1989. Of course, if you have a Fender from the mid 80's to mid 90's, there is no guarantee that the neck was not changed at some point.

I totally agree with Gunmetal blue. I remember when I got my first American made Strat. It was a paint stripped, amber stained 1987 Strat Plus (which by the way was origenally gunmetal blue.) It's serial number started with E4. A couple of people tried to tell me that I had a fake. I did my research and learned the truth.

After Fender was bought by its current owners they only had some parts, bodies, warn out tools and a name. The factory was not part of the deal.

Infact in 1983 Fender Japan was started and all Fenders that year were made in Japan. There was a company in Japan that made great copies so the owners got with them and formed Fender Japan.

I owned one of the '62 tele customs in 3-color sunburst. Great guitar.

There is a geat Fender book out there called "the Fender Book." I think that it was published in 1993.
