Hello All,

I was going through my storage the other day and found an old Strat I had fogotten I had. I bought it I wanna say around 1985 its an American Made Strat with the serial number E 336188. The strange thing about it is it only has one tone knob, the plug in for the cable is placed where the bottom tone would normally go. I have never seen any others like this.

Has anyone ever seen one like this or did I get dupped 20+ years ago?

Your serial number indicates the following:

Guitar Info
Your guitar was made at the
Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan
in the Year(s): 1984 - 1987

You may have a MIJ (Japenese made) or CIJ Fender. Look for the Made in Stamp. Either in headstock or above the neck nount. If you post pics, someone else may help you identify it further. BTW I found this info on:

http://www.guitardaterproject.org/

Hope this is what it is...CIJ/MIJ are highly regarded guitars for Fender.

Thanks for the reply, Headstock says made in the USA, I bought it when they were talking about not making them in the USA anymore and stuck it in storage, and totally forgot about it.

I believe he mentioned MIA strat rkreisher.....looks it's a circa '82-'85 start you got there and was prolly modded as the tone knobs are not there...

Those strats in that year are highly prized imo......its unfortunate that the tone knobs are not present...

Rkreisher, thanks for the link I looked it up and it says it was made at:
The Fullerton plant (CBS Era) USA 1982-1985.

I have never seen a strat with the plug in the bottom tone knob position. There is also no back plate on the guitar, which all my other strats have and no cut out where you would normally see the plug in.

Thanks again guys

Thanks for the catch. Your right. I need to slow down and read more closely. Part of the reason to add the link so he can look it up himself.

Here's a 85-87 MIJ Strat with the input on the heel.
P.S. If anyone has more info on this axe, please post on my MIJ Thread.
Thanks,
Peace thru Music!

In 1983 they changed to strat to the one tone knob guitar the OP mentions. You will see it on the URL below. I had the catalog for that guitar many years ago but never bought one. I wanted the elite strat that came out then too.

As I recall the mid-80s change to one tone knob and non-recessed jack were the result of some internal budget cuts. Not surprising, especially when you consider that the mid-80s might have been the worst years for Fender: everyone was playing Jacksons, Charvels and Arias.

Here's another site with info

http://www.stratcollector.com/scn/base/83.html

that was the Standard Strat at the time.

A very brief time just before CBS sold the company to the current owners.
