say what you want about zappa but he had moments of brillance.
the exit solo on muffin man off the bongo fury album is a great example.

I'd say the second solo in "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath, the (I believe) second solo in "Hitch a Ride" by Boston, or the solo to "We Will Rock You" by Queen.

Those are the ones that come to mind right away.

The solo in Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix at the New Years Eve concert at the Fillmore East 1969. So far ahead of his time.

Guitarist who did the solo on "Rock Around the Clock" was Danny Cedrone, a well-regarded session guitarist of the time. He used a Gibson ES-300 with a single P-90 pickup at the neck.

Back in 70:s there was a band named Go. They were Stomu Yamashta, Michael Shrieve, Al diMeola, Steve Winwood and some others.
They made a live record : Go - live from Paris.

I wish I could play you the song "Crossing the line" from that album. Oh, I wish.

Al diMeola must have been to the crossroads before that Paris show.

Anybody knows what I'm talking about?

I don't know what guitar diMeola played in '76. Les Paul probably. With DiMarzio pickups.
However, I think that solo counts. Like all others on this list that was played on unfenderish guitars. A great solo is a great solo.
