Why Fender continues to ship the American Strats with Silver Bullet 9s is beyond me I rip them off and slap on a set of 10s then set the bridge, intonation and relief of the neck then check string height.

I used to mix 2 different packs of Ernie Ball when I was in my Stevie Ray obsessive phase in order to match his 13-58 gauges.

On my Strat with Texas Specials I use Ernie Ball Heavy Tops - Skinny Bottoms. Its a set of 2 different guages. 11`s on top, 10`s on the bottom.

webstrings can also set you up with custom sets/ well not actually custom sets, but a variety that is pretty good to start, and are cheap enough to combine sets

A shop near my mums still sells single strings. That was great as a kid. I think i played for 3 years without ever changing the whole set at one time. I seem to remember that when i went onto using set sets i struggled for a while. Then i decided to push the limits of how thick i could go. I managed a set of 13' acoustic folk guitar strings on my avon les paul copy. Did they sound great, really thick. Couple that with the fact that the avon had singlecoil pickups housed in humbucker housings it certainly got unusuall sounds. Eventually the neck went like robin hoods bow and i had to pack them tricks in. I cant remember exactly what the gauges of single strings i used was it was something like 9,9,13,18,26,38.
