Is there a way to adjust the volume of a single string?
The A string seems a little quieter than the rest when using the neck or middle pickups.
This is an american delux strat

Take the pick up gaurd off and slide the magnet a little that should boost the one string.

Does that mean taking off all of the strings, knobs and selector switch tip?
Is there a set screw that locks the magnet core in place?
I kind of want to know what I'm getting into before I start.

Yes you have to remove the strings to get at the back side of the pick ups. For me removing strings and making adjustments is fairly easy. It takes a little time and patience so go slow.
