It meant the Bass (top) side of the pickup should be a little lower than the Treble (bottom) side.

Don't forget to check the height with the string pressed down on the last fret.

Yes, the low E side of all 3 pickups is lower than the high E side.

I bet that's how people end up with their pickups too close to the strings; they forget to do that.

I used to comply with the the recommended heights to the letter. With time I just use them as an indicator because each pickup is different and a quarter or half a turn of the screw could make a difference to the better.

+1 on this. That "spec" you read should only be used as a general guide line. Generally speaking, a pickup with more "pull" should be a little lower from the strings so the magnetic field doesn't keep the string from vibrating, thus killing your sustain. A pickup with less pull can be raised a bit closer to the strings. All and all it's a bit of a balancing act really and quite subject to personal taste and preference (just as string height is)....some folks prefer a lower action, some like a higher action. Some folks like the pups really biting into the strings, others go for the sustain and a more "airy" sound. Don't be afraid to play with it a bit to find what -you- like :D.

Peace,
Jim

One thing I forgot to say ... the closer the pup height to the strings the louder the volume/attack gets as you play closer to the body on the fretboard and press the strings closer to the pickup.

For an excellent way to adjust your pickups do a search on the Forum for "Nickel Method".
