Hi. I just went through a huge metal obsession recently, but now I'm into blues and classic rock. I'm considering getting an SRV strat or an Eric Clapton strat. The only problem is I'm not sure if it can do metal or not. Even though I don't play metal much any more I want to have the option to. So could I get a really high gain tone on a SRV or Eric Clapton strat? And how about the HSS strat? If not I'm probably gonna have to buy a Carvin, which I'm not really sure about.

But, how could I change it? The only metal pickups are humbuckers and Strats use single coils.

Hi, I don't own any Signature Series Strats, not that I don't like them, I don't have a need for them. No one get me wrong they are very well built guitars- that series is just not for me.

The only suggestion I can make is what I do. I have a Strat for playing Blues and I have a Strat with EMG high output passive pickups for playing Metal and Hard Rock.

On the subject of Carvin- Great Guitars!! I own one and it's a pleasure to play.

all/most strats are routed for a humbucker in the bridge.

Wait so I can just put one in if I want?

And would you recommend getting a Carvin over a Strat I'd rather have a strat but...

Amazing what you can accomplish with a pickup swap.

Black pickups will "metalize" your strat \m/

Sure. Just check to see what routing your strat has.

If it already has routing for a humbucker just buy one and a new pickguard, and if it doesn't, you can get it routed or to play it safe, put in some single coil size humbuckers.

Though I think the new SC pickups and the S1 switching can do metal.

Imagine what you could do if you add Jeff Beck's bridge and nut, clapton's TBX and midboost and maybe some lace sensors to that equation D:

This may sound sacrilegious, but why not just get a Les Paul, or an SG? They're both proficient for blues and classic rock, and they can crank up the metal sound really well also. But they're neck is not as smooth as Fenders and most Strat-like guitars. And the Les Paul may make you feel like you have an albatross around your neck, but it'll produce the tone that you thrive for.
