While we are on the subject. Would the intonation of the guitar need to be adjusted when changing to heavier strings? I just recently bought an american deluxe strat that came loaded with 9's but I want to jump to 11's.

Yes, Intonation would have to be changed going from 9's to 11's.

I make it a point to check intonation after every string change even if I don't change string gauge.

Thanks! I am going to drop the guitar off to have two extra springs put in the trem block so I will have the strings changed and intonation set at the same time.

The number of springs in the back is up to you. I have 5 in mine because it makes it more stable for me.

I would have the intonation checked even going from 9's to 10's. But that's just me.

No. Not unless you also tighten down the screws for the claw.

I would have to see it, but it sounds like it will be ok that way.

I use GHS Boomer Low tunes 11-53 i think. I only have 3 springs and my trem is set super tight, the way i play i cant have that thing moving on me. i hit it hard and jerk it around a lot, and i have no tuing problems!! I did until I started using Boomers

Big mistake.

Stick with 11's.

Yeah, tried that too- Stevie must have had bionic fingers!

I don't see how people use 9's. They don't have enough beef to 'em. Start with 10's and once you're used to the guage switch to 11's. To me they are they perfect guage. Chunky sounding but bendable... 8)

I agree ... 10s are the perfect gauge!

i just changed strings on my hwy 1, from 9's to 10's diadrios,
put an extra spring in the back, tightened the claw a tiny bit, adjusted bridge height, and checked intonation myself. have to admit, it was really cool working on my strat, and finally hearing the outcome.
this forum is great, you guys gave really good advice.
cafeathers, should i place the extra spring,(total of 5) and loosen the claw a bit, or just let be.

how easy is it to change the nut to a graphite nut? and the tuners to schallers or other headstock locking tuners? thats my next project.

Big strings take some getting used to. But it is probably the best way to thicken your tone.

I'm currently using Joe Morrell lap steel strings on my strat, I found I can get my "big gauges" all at one time with these and they really sound good. Ever since I started using big gauges I have all 5 springs on and the claw tightened down and tuning is as stable as ever.

I love these things.
