The reason I asked if the neck had been removed and the neck pocket checked is I'm thinking it is a Warmoth body.

Hi special_ed: further to what BigJay was saying - Japanese "Squier by Fender" Contemporary models with E prefix serial numbers were made from 1984 to '87. Info about them can be found on this page, though it mentions nothing like your guitar:

Off hand, the only Strat I can think of with three swiches instead of a selector switch was the Stratocaster Elite. Image search Google to find pics of those. Very different from yours, however.

Side note: many moons ago Chet Feathers was talking of modding a pickguard to produce an Elite Strat type setup. I wonder if that project went any further...?

Cheers - C

The project is still being wired.

Thank you! Waitin' with interest...

I figured you were. I'll post pics and a review when it's completely finished.

On the topic of MIJ's...why are more people not extolling the virtues of these guitars as opposed to MIM's or MIK's. I don't get it. Most of these lil MIJ's and CIJ's are wonderful, easy to work on, easy to play, priced properly, and crafted nicely; and yet the yammering for MIM's continues.

Some of these MIJ's are the truest bargains in this world, but hardly a peep. Hmmm...

I believe there's hardly a peep because the full lineup of new MIJ Strats aren't currently available in the US. So the "new Strat" buyers aren't buying MIJ Strats, they are buying either MIM or MIA.

There are plenty of MIJ fans around here, though. We are guys who bought them in the '90s (when they were being sold in the US) or before. There aren't that many MIJ Strats finding their way into the US now.

True, I think the only new MIJ you see for sale is the Pink Paisley and the Blue Flower. You are right though us older peeps remember them and the MIJ Strat look alikes. I would love to get a Springy Sound.

There were plenty of fine Japanese Strat-copies: from Tokai, Greco, Fernandes, Fuji Gen Gakki, etc ...

Some of those makers were contracted to build the "official" Fender MIJ guitars ...

That is not an MIJ Stratocaster Contemporary that I described. That is a Stratocaster Squire.

The Stratocaster Contemporaries, while MIJ, are NOT Squires.

See the top of this page. The gentleman has stuff to say about the difference between Japanese and American basswood.

http://www.guitaremporium.co.uk/index.p ... uitars&a=0

Mind you, I have absolutely no idea if what he's saying is right or not. Make of it what you will...

Cheers - C

EDIT: PS That fella is apparently stopping importing Japanese Fenders, due to currency shifts making it unprofitable. Anyone in my part of the world, don't count on being able to buy CIJ guitars from that website...

Here is a link to my 85 MIJ that I bought that year from a local shop. At the time I was not happy because it had Made in Japan on it. Now I would not trade or sell it. It's a great playing guitar. It is the blue one on the left about 3/4 down the page. My daughter has claimed it and now has it at her house. I heard something about Fender re-tooling or something in America about that time so they shifted the building of strat to Japan for a while. No idea if it's true but it is a sweet playing guitar, can't say much about the pups though. I don't know what they are. Peace!!

There is nothing wrong with Basswood you just need to seal the devil out of it when you finish it because it will suck a lot of finish and it does not take to moisture . It does tend to be lighter then Alder. And yes a Linden is a basswood tree you see lots of them used for there shade ability. I took one down in front of My House 4 years ago that was about 60' it was a beautiful Tree but the seeds that they drop are horrible and I meen thousands of these things for like 8 months a year these little brown finger shaped leaves with real hard pea sized seeds under them fall everywhere. The trees green leaves are big and round great for shade though which is why the are so many still around in the neighborhood. Some call them Carolina Basswoods and others Lindens.
