He is a 'nice' guitarist....who am I kidding! He sucks at playing the guitar and he sounds like he sings with mashed potatoes in his mouth. Wes, Jimi, Beck, Prince, and Page are my faves; JM cannot hold up against these fellows. I will give him one thing: JM does compose pop songs. At this time in music that is a commodity that cannot be underrated. I just think he should get someone else to play and sing his songs.

Ignorant comment. If you are upset by my comment and still feel he can't hold his own please watch provided video for you entertainment.

Hilarious.

Guitar players with limited musical exposure equate some kind of sweaty, heartbroken SRV-style "authenticity" with depth, and then claim John Mayer doesn't have any, I guess because he wrote some hits and cracks jokes.

But players with a wider view of music would tend to think that John Mayer exhibits much greater depth than, say SRV, because of his use of extended harmonies, hi expanded rhythmic vocabulary, and his ability to switch from rock to jazz idioms with in single tune (check out his live read on I Don't Need No Doctor" on YouTube sometime). This is musical depth I'm talking about, not some kind of imagined "deep soul" thing.

cu_jarret, "ignorant" is precisely the word. You can't have listened to Mayer and say these things, so you can only assume that anyone who would say he "sucks" is simply ignorant of his work.

I'm not upset by your comment. I just don't like his musicianship. I'm originally from Chicago, and have seen countless blues artists. JM is more like blues lite, lower in calories and manages to have less filling. He 's not my kind of axeman. Sorry, but I do allow for a difference of opinion; my idiosyncrasies are not yours. But you can love JM and I won't have problem. I know I won't convince you by a comment on this board. I did compliment his songwriting skills, in my post. But I wish he wouldn't sing his songs.

I do appreciate his attention to the blues. But if he went to Chicago, he would get owned or schooled. I'd appreciate if he showed me some 11th or 13th chords and wrote some advanced musical forms. My idea of a great blues band out of LA is Los Lobos, who do it without sweating or the constant mugging JM uses. And they can play! See this:

I also listened to "I Don't Need no Doctor". I heard John Scofield do the exact same arrangement on the Tonight show about 3-4 years ago. The only difference is JM is cuter than a bald middle aged guitarist. Hey I resemble that description! LOL !

BTW I don't play as good as these two... but I'm developing my own style, finally. Really that's all you can hope for.

Did you miss John Mayer standing right next to Sco in that performance? He was the one singing. With the Strat.

qblue, I'm glad I'm not the only one who see's it that way. I'm probably older than a lot of people on this board. I probably have gear older than most people on this board.

I feel absolutely nothing from Mayer's music. He just seems to rehash everybody else s stuff. I don't find you ignorant at all.
Ignorance is calling Mayer a Blues artist. You can go to any open mic at any Blues Club in Chicago, Houston or even Philly for that matter and hear better musicianship.

I suspect that we would define "musicianship" very, very differently.

That's the truth. I listen to just about every kind if music imaginable. Some I'm passionate about, some not so much. I don't claim to be an expert. Some people just hear the Blues differently than others. There's a lot of newer musicians I really like. Mayer just strike me as one of those look what I can do kid of musicians. He just don't impress me. If he impresses you and others, that's cool. No problem.
