he's a good blues player. and he will only get better
with time. as far as him on the same level as Eddie Van halen /Clapton/Hendrix/SRV.
no he's not. he has not earned the write to be with the three mentioned.
somday he will but not now.

greatest guitarist of alltime are

1.Edward Van halen
2.Jimi Hendrix
3.David Gilmoure
4.SRV.
5.Robin Trower.
6.Eric Claton.
someday mr mayer will be among these legends.

I have to admit i always thought he was a dave matthews ripoff (being that I am a big dmb fan) until I really gave him a chance. At this point, I think he is a much better play than dave. I also think DMB has a better supporting band which evens things out a lot. Timmy Reynolds helps too. ;)

Interesting...someone else who sees Matthewisms in there. Of course, the SRV goes without saying. Mayer gives you a treat in concert when he backs off his pop repertoire and gets into blues. But that's an exception. Mayer understands the importance of mainstreaming as being his bread and butter but, as he said in his show which ended with Buddy Guy..."That's the show. Now we're gonna play some guitar!"

I enjoyed that part of the concert the most, because the bimbos in the front row didn't know any of the lyrics....but I did!!

That was a good end to that show. I liked it as well.

To the above who stated his pickup are like Texas Specials with scooped mids, you are incorrect. Big dippers are low output pickups with a scooped mid. Texas Specials are a overwound hot high output pickup.

Dumbles, Two Rock CR (sig), Two Rock Emerld, Two Rock Sterling sig, Fender Vibroverb, Fender Reverb... I could continue but I just mentioned more gear than any of most will own.

Hope I helped.

I think that as we have only had on JM trio album or at least an alnum influenced by that side of him I think there's a long way to go for him.

More than a talented musician but he has an awe inspriring vision.

JM STRAT, GET ONE, amazing,

Definitely helped. You simply restate the reasons for my cynicism with respect to these quests for tone. Everyone should find their own voice.

The technology behind contemporary large audience performance is beyond the capabilities of the average player without considerable investment.

Close....but no cigar.

Doc

i recently purchased the "Where the Light is" DVD and was floored! More so for his work with the Trio and especially with his Jimi covers.

i think he is highly underrated as a guitarist.

Hey Fellow Stratheads-

Johm Mayer- Hmmm I too like his work with trio - It really changed my mind about him as just another Pop artist. He's got some cool chops and a lot of passion in his playing. I think he is worth listening too...but nothing really ground breaking...and thats ok (I sound like his therapist) He really hasn't done anything that I am willing to pay money for (Concert or CD) -

Any given weekend I can hear some local guitarest play some good jimi covers or SRV Roadhouse ....Some really top notch players. John Mayer in my opinion is good...but nothing revolutionary YET....

does that mean his pickups are underwound to make them low output? if not what determines the output level of a pickup??

There's a thread on this somewhere in the Forums where we have explored the question of this 'scooped' mids. It may also have been
dealt with in the artist's own website.

Search

If I remember correctly it was Mayer who described these pickups as being designed to 'scoop' out the midrange so as to emphasize the high and low frequencies.

My wife turned me on to JM back in his more poppy-days. I liked him back then mostly because the misses did. I have got to see him progress as a blues player and have come to quite enjoy his guitar playing and his newer work, espiecially the Trio stuff. Ironically, my wife is not as into him since his been playing more blues. :P

At any rate, I can't seem to get enough of this tune lately:

Cheers!

True that his pickups have absolutely nothing in common with Texas Specials.
