i'm a JM fan

couple things about his tone:

1) low output pickups
2) his fingers
3) Two rock amps

Those are the 3 things that effect his tone the most. No one really knows the specs of the pickups in his black relic, other than the fact they are low output. Good alternatives to those are the FCS real 54's, and fender 57/62 pickups

I never really knew he could play guitar well until I heard him play 'Wind Cried Mary' by Hendrix. Then I saw him on the Crossroads DVD and I've been extremely impressed by his playing. Clapton was the same way for me, I never really saw what people were talking about until I saw him wailing on the crossroads DVD. I'd love to see em both in person.

Like his playing but not his attitude. Seems to be very arrogant, but I hope I'm wrong.

Seems to have good taste in music, guitars, watches but not women.

Seriously though, I think that his guitar tone is incredible. Technique is also amazing.

Most have probably seen this but just in case.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh4n1bZi4d8 -Personally, I think that Mayer really held his own against Clapton. Definitely like his guitar tone more.

Also, if you haven't seen the 'Where The Light Is' be sure to check that out!

I agree with whoever said that they weren't a fan of his attitude. There's no doubt that he's an amazing guitar player. I've seen him in concert three times and there's something magical about what he does. He's actually one of the reasons I picked up a guitar in the first place. However, I'm much more fond of his old school attitude when he was just a dude from Connecticut who could blow on his guitar rather than a this newfound "celebrity" persona that he's acquired - mostly because of the women he's been dating, might I add.

It just sucks that there's no likeable personality that goes along with those amazing guitar skills. He'd be the ultimate package then.

I have to admit i always thought he was a dave matthews ripoff (being that I am a big dmb fan) until I really gave him a chance. At this point, I think he is a much better play than dave. I also think DMB has a better supporting band which evens things out a lot. Timmy Reynolds helps too. ;)

Love the guy! He rotates his guitars a lot but he definitely gets a lot of his tone from his pickups, and like zaddpac stated before, from his fingers and two rock. The pickups built into his sig strat are basically texas specials with a scooped-mid. The sounds you can get out of that thing is unbelievable. Out of his 200 guitars, I like his CS black relic the most. Can't wait for more blues off his next album!

You know I was thinking, would it be right to put Mayer in the same league as Clapton, Hendrix, SRV etc. It seems to me that if he hadn't started off making bubble gum pop tunes first he wouldn't have acheived the same amount success he has today. I mean a lot more guitarists respected him once he came out with the John Mayer Trio live and Continuum, but if he had done that first I think he would've been able to garner a name for himself, or he would've had a harder time doing it. He's a great guitar player, but I don't sense any type of musical revelation or revolution coming from John Mayer. The artists I mentioned above stuck with what they did which always involved the blues, Mayer had to do pop first and then once he was recognized went into the blues. Idk maybe I'm completely wrong with my theory.

Did anyone see John Mayer on the Chappel show? That bit was extremely funny and introduced a side of JM that displayed his sense of humor. Also, another clip (I forget where I saw it) involved JM being the "typical" star with an ego larger than my car. A real tongue-in-cheek bit that made me think he doesn't really take himself as seriously as people think because of the self-effacing sense of humor the bit was hinged on.

I think he is an amazing guitarist and I guess if I were him, I'd probably do pretty much what he's done.

And seriously, wouldn't any one of us take a ride with Jessica given the chance? Come on!

My daughter turned me on to his music back when Room For Squares came out. He's very good. My wife and I have seen him in concert twice and I'm sure if his next tour brings him this way we'll see him again.
