My grand Father played guitar but neither of my parents played any instrument. My Wifes family are all musically inclined.

My Dad played a bit when I was younger (and still does)- His taste in music definitely rubbed off!

Every Saturday and Sunday morning there was a Clapton album blasting throughout the house, usually either Behind The Sun or Journeyman. Those albums and that guitar playing left a huge impression on me. From the age of 6 on I knew that I wanted to be a guitar man.

He was more than happy to buy me my first guitar (an Olympic White Fender Duo-Sonic) and begin to teach me to play.

My dad is a pretty good amateur fiddle player - he has a very nice old violin.

From the womb onwards I grew up listening to the classical violin repertoire - I knew the Beethoven concerto inside out before I ever heard a note of rock!

Started to learn the violin as a kid, but family breakup put paid to that. Then along came that wicked rock and roll...!

Cheers - C

My Dad played a little piano but really wasn't very accomplished at all.

My oldest brother also plays piano and is very good, reflects the 50+ years he has been playing that instrument. He has a daughter that also plays piano and I'm told she is pretty good.

My other older brother plays the flute and sings in his church choir. He also sings regularly in a barbershop quartet. The phenomenon in the family is one of his sons who definately has the guitar playing gift. He was sort of a prodigy at a really young age.

And, of course, your's truly. I played trombone for a few years in Jr High and High School and played in a small stage band with that instrument. I started playing guitar when I was around 8-9 years old.

My uncles were in a band together in the 70's. I got interested in Rock music at age 10 or so. (Led Zeppelin). I saw my uncle play Stairway to Heaven on the guitar and I had to play. I was in awe. He gave me my first acoustic.

Mom and Dad never played, but my Dad listened to CCR alot.

My Grandma played a little piano, church songs mostly. But this was not what influenced me, it was rock music guitar heros and my uncle.

My uncle used to also teach piano and guitar. He is more of a all around musician than a guitar player, he really understands music well, but was not the blow you away type virtuoso. But its all I needed.

My father plays guitar and instruments were always around the house when I was growing up. I thought guitar playing wasn't in the cards for me b/c it was "his thing" but I always wanted to play. Eventually, at the age of 20, I decided I was going to figure it out and not give up until I did. 18 years later, I'm still at it but still trying to figure it out. My old man favors Telecasters and Esquires and I seemed to go in the same direction as the only quality electric instrument I own is one of the New American Standard Telecasters.

My nan played piano by ear. Play her something once and she'd have it down perfect. I think that has partly passed down to my sister and I. Both of us can pick a tune out within a couple 'o' three tries, though nowhere near the accuracy that nan could do it. Its the sole reason im so hung up on ear/pitch training.

My mother played the fife in a VFW's drum and bugle corps; my two brothers both took up playing guitar after I was playing it for several years and my father played the stereo.

Not at all. Nobody played any instrument. My brother started guitar about 5 years ago, and I started a almost a year ago, I taught my self how to play some camp fire songs on my harmonica, and am teaching my self guitar, and I am seeing more and more that I have a stupid teacher. :? :D

Now that I think of it, I had an uncle who played guitar. In fact, he came over Christmas Day 1967 to tune my new (first ever) guitar. Even taught me a couple of chords.

Both my parents can sing pretty well, but they never did any performing in any way. I knew I could play guitar even before I had learned how. I used to drag an old semi-hollowbody around the house as a toddler and pretend I was playing what I heard on the radio. Eventually I learned the basics and now I've been playing guitar for over 25 years.
