I have an HSS Strat that I wan't to do some custom wiring on. The way the Strat is set up now, (switch pos. 1=bridge, 5=neck) when the 5 way is in pos. 2 the bridge humbucker is split and added with the middle pickup for the familiar Strat tone. My question is whether I can utilize the split humbucker mode all by itself. In essence, I want to be able to use the bridge humbucker in a single coil mode by hooking it up to a push/pull pot. When the pot is used, it would switch 5 way pos. 1 from humbucker to single coil.
I also wan't to add a switch to add the neck pickup to any other combination. Basically an on/off for the neck pickup. (I wan't the neck/bridge combo like the Tele)
So what I am looking for is the 5 basic sounds, plus a bridge single coil sound, and independent use of the neck pickup. Does this make sense? What is the best way to accomplish this custom wiring set up???

Hi,

You will need two switches. One to control the humbucker wiring and another to control the "bridge on" option. The latter ads the bridge to whatever position you are on (so you can have bridge and neck like on a tele and all three pups at the same time).

In this way, when "bridge on" is out, you could have at least two positions 2: one with "humbucker series // middle" and "humbucker split // middle".

Your switches could be push-pulls (on any of the 3 controls, but I'd rather chose the Tones) to preserve the stock appearance or mini-toggles.
If having mini-toggles (at least one) doesn't bother you, you could even wire your bridge humbucker to a 3 way DPDT (on/on/on) so you could have series/split/parallel (an thus three different position 2 without even including "bridge on" option).

Here are now the DIAGRAMS:

Here is the link for the split/series wiring.
In this one depending on which one of the two described options, the black or red wire should go the 5 way switch.

Here is the link for the series/split/parallel diagram.

Here is the link for the "bridge on" wiring.

Here is the link for the general HSS diagram.
But if you want a diagram already with the push-pull for splitting, here it is.
They don't have it there with both splitting and "bridge on".

NB:
You should be aware that each pup manufacturer has its own pup color coding.

It's up to you now. ;)

BTW, you asked for a "neck on", but I still showed you the "bridge on" as you can achieve your aim (bridge // neck). Ergonomics are a little bit different, though.

If you go series/split/parallel, it would give you 15 options!
9 on the 5 way switch without the "bridge on" and 6 more with the "bridge on option".

Sweet!!! It seems a little complicated, as I am no genius when it comes to electronics, but hey, I will try and see what I can do. Thanks for your input.

You're welcome. :)

You still have some little homework to figure out which configuration you'd like to have and draw your own diagram.

Don't forget to record your present wiring in case you'd like to go back.
