I would say thats and 80's Fender The guitar dater project says 79-81 but I have a book I use for serialization and it says S8800000-S9800000 are 1980 and with a 3 bolt neck that may be.
The book I use lists 78's as having the possible serial numbers of : S7 + 5 digits, S8 + 5 digits, and S9 + 5 digits.

79 as having the possible serial numbers of : S9 + 5 digits, and E0 + 5 digits.

80 as having S9 + 5 digits, E0 + 5 digits, and E1 + 5 digits.

This doesn't really narrow it down a lot.

With the 3 bolt neck, it suggests a 79 that may have hit the store in 80.

You could always pull the neck and see what the date stamp on the heel says

As a general rule nothing CBS or post-CBS is considered truly collectible. If it has special features that might make a bit of difference

I have to disagree, cuz a lot of guitarists can't collect pre-CBS Strats due to the outrageous costs involved, and limited availability. Lots of collections are filled with not only CBS and post CBS guitars, but MIJ and MIM Strats too. Collections are limited by budget and desire for a particular model(s).

Yeah, its hard to narrow down. Wish we could help more, but you really night have to look for the date stamp on the heel of the neck, but I know I don't like removing guitar necks, unless absolutely necessary.

I knew it was unusual when I bought it, as I'd seen very few black strats with a maple neck.

Just like Sting's black Strat. Which it so happens he bought at Manny's in... 1981.

Which proves nothing, of course. Somehow I just can't bring myself to watch all the way through the Bring On The Night video just to see if I can spot whether his is a three or four bolt neck...
