Know your material. Knowing your stuff will allow you to play without having to think about what your doing. Play to your crowd. Feed off of their energy. Good luck!

Hi Tim: yes! Good advice would be to read what Nikininja has to say if he posts on this thread! He has had very sensible things to say on this kind of topic in the past.

And very good luck to you - let us know how it goes.

Cheers - C

when your playing in your bedroom your playing guitar, that's one thing, but when your playing to a audience you are doing one thing more.. ENTERTAINING. entertain your audience :)

-Make sure your fly is up...
-Don't forget your ax...
-If you feel nervous, just think of your performance as a gift to the audience. It always feels good to give a gift, right?

Good luck and knock 'em dead.

Practice your material well enough that you aren't staring at your guitar's neck (or your shoes) while performing. Make eye contact with the audience and look like you're having fun...smile.

Remember to bring extra cords, picks and strings-very important!
Duct tape too.
Playing in your basement and playing live is like going from the driving range to the golf course- a different world. Just have your tunes down and try to enjoy the evening.

Play in front of people before the gig. Brothers, sisters, friends, parents, anyone. It helps you get used to people staring at you.

Know what you're playing in and out. When you're up there, you want to be fully comfortable with what you're going to play. You don't want to be thinking too much about chord changes, solos, etc. You should have that as second nature by the time you play.

Bring a tuner, stand, strap, extra picks (have some laying out in case you drop one, etc), and an extra cord.

Have good cords, if possible. You don't want your signal cutting out and popping through your amp - terrible.

Important - most of your audience are NOT musicians. They are there to hear music and have a good time. They want to be entertained more than they want to be impressed. It's better to make a few small mistakes, get right back on track, and have a good time - than the be super serious stiffs up there and play it technically perfect.

Learn to take compliments. A simple "Thanks" "Thank you" "Thanks, I appreciate it" is fine when someone tells you how good you are, etc.

Remember, there are a lot of people in the audience that wish they were you - wish they could play music, and be up on a stage playing like that. If they go out of their way to say hi, or compliment, thank them, be friendly and professional.

Don't over play. Play well and just enough. Playing too much or over the top won't impress anyone except a few shredder-wannabees.

Always leave them wanting more. It's better to have them say "Damn, I really liked them. I wish they played some more. I have to see them again", than to say "OMG, when are they going to stop already?"

The main thing: have fun and they will too. If they have fun, like what you're playing, and are interested in what you're doing, they'll come back to see you, or buy a CD, or whatever.

The best way for you to relax and have fun? Know your stuff before so that you're not worrying about it at the gig.
