You know what I'm noticing?
The Strat is A Guy's guy guitar it's ruff around the edges it'll tear you a new one with that Classic fender distortion sound.
I think Strats are guitars meant for people with taste in distortion but at the same time can dim it down and play so refined it'll be a while before we get a next gen strat master (like Jimi,Stevie Fruscianti, etc)!
I mean I was A gibson idiot, wouldn't touch a fender with a ten foot pole, but it's the strat's classy reverb that broadend my horizons.

So to all The artist that do give a $@!& grow a pair and pick up a strat! :p

Page is one of my favorite guitarists, but it seems he played the LP on stage and an old '50s Tele in the studio, at least for Zep's 1st four albums. In fact, he recorded most of the 1st record with the Tele and a small tube amp.

The solo on "Stairway to Heaven" was done with the Tele, also.

david gilmore plays both ,but i guess your average flavor of week band may have some trouble with more sofisticated composition

And the twelve string bits were played on a fender XII. The SG double neck was just for live

x2! im a metal head and use overdrive, no distortion. and i play megadeth on a daily basis. you can sound heavy without lots of distortion.

Absolutely but still it's tougher to beat a strat at curtain area's I personally think.

Who cares what is cool in the UK or the US. People should play what they like. Not what people think is cool.

There's probably a wish for a simpler sound with many UK bands and Teles and LP's give them that. I have a Tele because there's ...well ...nothing too it! Love strats but I can only afford 1 decent guitar so I went with a Tele 50s Classic RI for it's simplicity. With all of the thrashing over here I often found that the 3 pots got hit and there's a need to thrash nearer the neck pick ups on a strat.

Still - each to their own! I'd love a strat, LP, ESP exp etc....

From chatting with UK-er's over the Internet, I've come to the conclusion this is more a fashion issue with pricing undertones. Many of the younger bands seem to come from several regions in the UK that are not particularly otherwise prosperous. Kids see professional music as a way out of near-poverty. New bands that hit the pop-charts often carry less pricey gear, and the wannabees follow the lead of their heros.

In the USA, jobs for younger people are more available and its easier to tap mom-and-dad or grandma-and-grandpa for gear dollars. Still, if you surf YouTube music channels, you see great younger players using second and third-tier instruments (pricewise) with outstanding results.
