i think a stratocaster can get you more sounds, so i think get the strat, and if you really need the sg buy it later on,

I agree. This is the path that I chose.

Though I am amazed at what Derek Trucks can do with an SG. :D

I think the correct question here is which do I want to buy first?

The strat and SG each excel in their own niche. Some things you can do on an SG you can't do on a strat and vice versa. In the end, you will want both.

Pardon the intreuption but, what is it that you can do with an SG that you cant do with a strat,,,???

This is just my opinion, of course, but there is a growl that you can get out of humbuckers that you can't get from a strat. By strat I mean a standard 3 single coil model.

My suggestion, just like what others have said - play them both and see which one feels the best for you, I wish there was an easy solution, but there isn't, unless you buy both. Be sure to play them both through the same amp, maybe the one that you have or close to it, that'll give you a good side by side test as well. Good Luck.
