I wrote an answer to this yesterday but the forum curfew went on while I was writing... :(

Basically, I'm not sure if new guitars will be worth as much in the future,

Vintage guitars are worth alot because the artists who played them made them famous, will our present times breed musicians that will be venerated like gods in the future? Will washburn USA guitars be worth zillions because Dimebag played them and died young in a tragic way?

People in those days did not have a clue their stuff would skyrocket in value, but people today buy stuff and keep it stored hoping it's going to increase in value. Companies have to create artificial rarity by making just a few pieces of a special guitar. And this is not only for guitars, I'm thinking about collector's Lord of the ring stuff, trading cards, etc...

We have to wait and see if the electric guitar will be as popular as it is right now in the future, and see if the hype of vintage guitars will still be present among the guitar players.

A Strat MIA will go up in value over time depending on how well you take care of it.

Mind you, '50s and '60s Fenders are valuable partly because of rarity - comparatively fewer were made in those years. Nowadays Fender is the biggest instrument maker on the planet, churning out millions of Strats. Fifty years from now there's gonna be a whole lot more of them floating around.

Still, there's always folks who feel a guitar sounds better simply because of the passage of time. So a half century old guitar will always have a certain cache...

(Not sure of the comparison with Lord of the Rings "collectables". My brother and I had a shedload of that kinda junk left over from our more tender years. Most of it ain't worth toffee now... )

Cheers - C

I say it'll be worth 4X what it is today.

I meant that people will buy that expecting that stuff will increase in value, like the star wars stuff from the late 70'S

Hehe - that's the kind of thing I was thinking of. Want a box or two full of "collectables" along the lines of Captain Scarlet, The Prisoner, Star Trek - not to mention many "rare" '60s LPs? Going very cheap!

Oh dear, a misspent childhood getting revealed here...

 - C

You know what, for things to increase in value, there has to be a certain hype around them, like old strats (all the guitar heroes)

The star wars stuff grew up in value because people became interested again in that stuff,

If there are guitars today you can buy that will grow up in value alot, I believe they are not the ones we think of today.

Maybe some private stock PRS?

We had Dimebag, you can be sure that if in 20 years from now kids start listening to Dimebag in mass and a new hype forms around him, the Washburn guitars will be worth alot...

I'm mentionning Dimebag because he died young in a tragic way, so it might end up doing the same thing that Jim Morrison did, same for Jimi and Janis...

In their time they were not as popular as they are today, far from it actually... And it took a certain amount of time before they grew up to godly status if I can call it that way.

We might experience the same thing with Kurt Cobain's guitars, his pedals, etc...

but people like hendrix were always extremly well known, and known as guitar g-ds, but as talented as dimebag is , if u ask people on the street about him they wont know who your talking bout, but if u ask about clapton, santana, or hendrix youll get a diferent response

Hendrix was very well known in his time but nothing compared to today... and it took alot of years before he became the guitar god we know today... the hype had to grow.

In my humble opinion, Dimebag was as popular when he died that Hendrix was when he died. If you went out and asked about Hendrix in 1969, even in 1973 or 1979, probably alot of people didn't know him.

But what if because of a new hype Dimebag is elevated to godly status (for any reason.... might be someone else anyway)

I believe it takes time for someone to be recognized as revolutionnay... it's the whole point of what i'm trying to say. Time makes people greater and even god-like. You might hear people now that will be considered gods in the future. No one knows what the HYPE will be in a few decades....

same for guitars!
