Yeah their boiled sweets (candy). Taste vaguely of pears but more like nail varnish. The smell is still there but the guitar lives in the case with the candy in the pocket. Its a sitcom scene to wake up with a steaming hangover and stick boiled sweets to your eyes eh?

It may be a formaldahyde smell. Its fairly common in new campers as well. As far as I know, you would be able to air it out if it is, but it may take several months.

Talk to someone in the detailing department of a new car dealership. They have a way of getting virtually every funky smell out of the inside of a car and making it smell like new again. I'm sure if you, "greased" one of them a few bucks, they could and would take care of it for you.
