Hi Eden: in my part of the world a proportion of our public buses are built by Mercedes Benz. I have noticed that they seem to use some kind of obnoxious substance - glue, perhaps - in the seat upholstery. Gives off a kind of hide glue stink - especially when warmed by many hot backsides!

I wonder whether your guitar's case has something similar used in the interior? What brand is it? I want to know what to avoid!

Your solution may be strings of garlic along side the guitar. Wards off vampires - and guitar case stink!

Cheers - C

I have had this too. I thought it was something they put in intentionally. For my nose I would describe as a sweet almost vanilla smell. AND I swear you ain't really smelled it until you stick your head inside a Taylor guitar case.

My Strat and the case smell killer!!! I don't know why but it smells like wood. I have 3 other guitars in cases and none of them smell like that, but I'm not complaining.

Smelly strat..... smel-ly strat.... what are they feeding you?

Yeah if it's a really new guitar, it's the finish. Polyurethane dries from the outside in and many manufacturers will ship after so many days of curing even though the inner layers of poly haven't dried completely.

On a different note... I once did not buy a guitar because I could have sworn that the previous owner was a heavy chain smoker. really bad stench.

It's the glue that they use to put the lining in with. I used to work at a guitar shop and that smell would just about knock you down when you walked into the case room. But i agree it's like the new car smell, nuttin like the new case smell!!

Mr Bill, thats the peardrops smell. I keep a half open bag of peardrops in the case pocket just to help it along.

Hi Ninja: no, it's definitely the Mercedes Benz bendy buses we are cursed with down my way. For a while I was thinking, why does the smelly person always come and sit next to me? Then I noticed it was always on the bendy buses, and that it gets a lot worse when they are full. More backsides warming up that upholstery glue!

Another reason to loathe those buses: and now it seems Fender have Mercedes building their hardcases for them! Yuk...

Cheers - C
