Actually, to be even more precise:

"A Strat being played by Jimi Hendrix."

A Strat being played by YOU is going to sound like you.

The SRV signature strat not only sounds like Stevie's "Number One" but also sounds very much like Jimi's guitar as well as David Gilmour's strat. The over-wound single coil "Texas Special" pickups pack a powerful tone that compliment a fine tube amp quite nicely. Together with the 5 position toggle switch it is versataile enough for a wide variety of artists that used strats.

Gurra - In my opinion, the best strat that will get you closer to Hendrix sound is one from the Fender Vintage Series, American Vintage 57 (maple fretboard) or even the American Vintage 62 (rosewood fretboard), and here's why. These two guitars not only have the neck feel, hardware or the nitrocellulose body paint, but they come stock with 57/62 single coil pickups. Contrary to popular belief, Hendrix or even SRV were using stock pickups and THEY WERE NOT high output pickups.

The 57/62 pickups are wounded at around 5.60 DC resistance. Anything above 5.75-5.80, like Texas Special or stock pickups from the American Series strats, will make your fuzz pedal sound too "heavy", assuming you are using one to get Hendrix tone. However with the 57/62 pickups plugged throuh a fuzz face, you get instant classic fuzz tone.

The USD 70's Stratocaster from the Vintage Series would be another good option, although they come with "vintage single coil pickups" and not really the 57/62. The 70's would give you the big headstock and bullet trust, just like Hendrix was using at the end of his career.

If your local dealer carry them, give them a test drive. Plug in through a Fender Twin Reverb and strike the chords for Wind Cries mary or Little Wing....you will see what I mean. Then give it a shot with your fuzz pedal. Then, switch strat to a modern strat like American Series and you will see how you loose the vintage tone required for Hendrix.

Any strat really...vintage spec would be the obvious choice!! Mex Classic 70's is the one,(fit some custom shop 69 pickups) or get th U.S model if you can afford it!! funny thing is..Jimi proberly didnt go for sound, in those days it was what you could get your hands on that stayed in tune ..and played nice, and could hold up on the road !!

Uh, SRV's Strat did have overwound pickups I thought?!? Anyways, Jimi bought tons of Strats when he was alive, so it really is a crapshoot. The 69 pickups might be a good option, and as a guitar, the 70s reissue or 62 Reissue might be good suggestions. What era of Jimi's playing did you like the most? He went through phases like any artist. He recorded a lot of his early stuff on a rosewood necked Strat, but around late 68-69 he switched to using the maple necked Strats. His effects were more important to his sound though- the Uni-vibe and Fuzz Face had a lot to do with his overdriven tone...

Yeah you're right about that, I second that :p

However it isn't really difficult replicating any of these signature jimi sounds by buying a pedal like a fuzz face (big muff) or the digi tech signature jimi pedal.
Althought the artist in me says the art is best performed by trying out these guitars mensioned above at your local store and determining yourself.
Afterall that is what guitar-playing is all about :p Doing, an occasional Jam and then prcticing, or is Gurra a lazy guy by nature :p
Just messing with ya :p
