I've played les pauls all through my guitaring life, but finally was convinced to try a strat, so recently got a nice MIM.

I'm having a bit of trouble getting a decent tone out of it, particulary when the amp is turned up for a gig or band practice, as this seems to add a lot more high end treble than i like.

Anyone got any suggestions, modifications, amp setting etc??

My amp is 120 watt Laney LV300 twin (tube driven), and i tend to use a Boss overdive pedal.

Thanks. :D

I just replace all the PUPS and electronics in my MIA Squire. It had some ceramic single coils with 500 k pots. It didn't sound awful I just got bored. So I put a lil 59'er in the neck and bridge and a vintage rail in the mid. All Seymour Duncans (in case you didn't know). I also put new 250k pots and a push pull volume for coil splitting. I gotta say I think this set up sounds amazing. I'm so happy with these PUPS. I can't wait to put SD Antiquity's in my MIA Tele.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, it is a MIM Standard. Sorry, i should have mentioned that!

Maybe i'll have to have a look into changing Pickups...

And i still havent made up my mind about Zeppelin touring without Plant!

I think the rumour is that Myles Kennedy could be singing for them and that they won't use the name Led Zeppelin. Who knows?

I say go to your local guitar shop, and play as many strats with different pickup configurations and types than yours, till you find stuff you like, and find out what they are!

Cheers for the replies! :D

I'm not looking to get a Les Paul tone from the strat (I have a les paul to do that!), i'm just trying to get the nicest strat tone I can.

Cheers.

Before going as far as changing out pickups, your Tone controls are your friend here.
Now, the stock cap for the tone controls gets to muddy to be usable IMHO, but changing that out for a Paper In Oil (PIO) cap like a Vitamin Q will make it usable. I also would go for a higher value (.047µF) in your case to warm it up even when the tone is set to 10.

Also the Jupiter Beeswax caps sound awsome in a Strat. The give you real meaty tone.

I have a Les Paul and a MIM Strat. I can go back and fourth between them with this setup and not have to change all my amp setting. The strat still sounds like a strat just warmer.

i found putting a eq after your guitar signal helps allot, espacialy if you have real twangy singles just lower the highs and raise the mids mine sounds sweat like that with my plexitube trough my princeton reverbe.

My MIM Strat has Texas Specials and sounds great.

Depending on your total set up you may not get the tone you want out of the lower end Stratocaster. Even the $800 Classic 50s RI with the Vintage pickups might fall quite short of acceptable overall tone response for you if you're ear is accustomed to clean and clear. I'm not that familiar with the American Strats' pickups but the best of bunch on the lower end could be the Fender Hot Alnico. I find SDs to be too overdriven, Kent Armstrongs have an odd, what I call English, sound. I think the best advice is previously given: go to a guitar shop and play - if you can hear yourself in the shop - the better Strat, $1000 or more. If you want to fool around with replacing pickups even the Texas Specials or the CS 54s are only around $150 a set. The Hot Alnicos are noticeably more responsive than the Vintage pups that are stock on the Classic 50s. It's a jungle out there. Good luck.

Cheers for all the replys people!

I sure have got alot to think about, and i'm grateful!

Putting an EQ between guitar and amp sounds like a cheaper option to try out first, before maybe considering PUP changes!

Thanks again. :D
