I recently purchased what I believe is a 04 Strat highway one. My question is----why are there two string trees on this guitar when most Strats I see have one? Thanks----I think.

My 96 American standard has 2 string trees. It doesn't have a low quality nut.

It is when they use the staggerd tuners that you only have the one tree. Staggerd turners cost more but when used you don't need two trees.

Mine has the 2 trees as well, but I don't use them, I just let the strings go over them. I don't like that pressure on the string, I have no probs with it staying in tune either.

The Highway One uses vintage-style hardware. The old Strats usually had two trees. I don't think it's any more complicated than that . . . but I could be wrong.

Steve,

I am pretty sure that the older strats used only one tree and the 'two-tree' policy was introduced later on. Both the 57 and 62 reissues only have one, whereas my '88 standard has two...

I guess you're right. The second tree wasn't added until 1972, back in the large headstock days. My '02 Hwy1 with the small headstock has two trees. Hmmm.

You right there stratman they added a second tree in the second year of the 3 bolt neck. Supposed to improve sound pulling string downward across the nut helping the influence the nut has on the neck. Staggerd tuners do the same thing by way of the post being shorter and the string being pulled down lower by the post.
