Hey I am in desperate need of a new guitar... right now im using this cheap strat rip off i bought at costco. I was just wondering what the differences were between the Highway One Strat and the American Series. Is the American Series really worth that much more then the Highway One?

Depends. If I were you I would go to a local shop and play em both. They are both fine guitars. Whether the Am series is worth the extra scratch over the HW1 is only a answer you can make.

Hi,

I own a Highway One (2005 model). It's the best playing Strat that I have ever played (Except a Heavy Relic which I can't afford right now)!

I tried alot of Strats (All American made models) before I bought this one, it felt and played the best (To me). So do yourself a favor and go play one!

I own one of the 2006 "Upgraded" Highway 1 Strats and it is a fabulous guitar. But that is MY opinion.

Go to your local music store(s) and try some out for yourself.

I too have been looking at a strat, I have a couple of teles and want to add a strat. Either a HW1 or American Standard. So, saturday I went to my local G/C and played both. I compared both, I looked them over carefully to try to detect any differences, of course the big difference is 1) the finish 2) the saddles are different as well & 3) the HW1 headstock is 70's style - HUGE. Then I played both, for some reason the finish on the necks seem to be different, the HW1 was less sticky, even thought the specs say they are the same. Both have rolled edges making a comfortable feel. I played them both thru a 65 Twin Reverb/RI, which is one of the amps I have. After a long playing test, I must say, the HW1 actually felt better to me. And, beleive it or not, I prefered the sound from the HW1 as well. I was sold on the American Standard before the test & now I am more confused than when I started looking. My advice is similar to those before , play them both.
Good Luck. 8)

I got a Highway One maybe a month or so ago. Great guitar. It's a pleasure to play it. I'm not saying I wouldn't rather have a Custom Pro but that's out of my range. I'm a better player for having an American Strat with low action and a more liquid kind of experience when playing.

If you've got more money to spend, why not go all the way to the American Deluxe? If you use a lot of overdrive, then you'll get the noiseless pickups and that might make a difference. Also, it's got greasebucket in the neck and the bridge, a really major paintjob and the 2-point tremolo. If you play pretty clean, then the Highway One is quiet, and has hum canceling in the 2 and 4 positions, and the vintage tremolo works well for the little that I use it. None of the differences between the Highway One and the Deluxe appealed to me, including the noiseless because I just didn't like the feel that sounded too quiet after what I'm used to, but they do make you come off better because they don't seem to amplify the little finger touches as much and kind of mute the errors. That's kind of amazing, really because that really makes you a better sounding player. I also noticed that on the Beck.

I agree you've got to play them. The guitar chooses the player.

Hi, as you can see as everyone has suggested- play the guitars of your choice. I understand you want to get feedback from players already using these guitars, but the final choice is on you. What works for me or others may not work for you due to different styles, technique etc.

The 2 guitars your interested in, should be compared side by side. Look at the action, fret detail, the bridges, everything. I would play the guitars unplugged first, to hear their natural tone and how well each resonate.
Now plug in:
Down at the 13th through the 17th fret on the High-E string, B string, G string- finger a note then bend it 1 or 2 pitches to hear if it chokes out. Do this on all 3 strings from the 13th-17th frets. You don't want them to choke out-end quickly. Next I would play all notes on each individual string (all 6) from the first fret to the last fret (usually 22nd fret). Play the notes one at a time-like a finger exercise. Listen for any dead notes.

If it feels good in your hands, has the desired action, plays like butter, that will be the guitar for you! Only you can decide what works for you.
