No. It is not normal. Does the crack go all the way through the back or is it superficial? Regardless I think I see if I could return it. If the shop won't exchance for a new one (warranty)...I would look for a replacement neck before it becomes an issue.

Hi essiera. Very hard to see what's going on in those photos, but I'm sure rkreisher is right. I'd be worried that the surface crack indicates damage to the wood underneath. If the timber is weak in that particular spot it may cause tuning problems later on. Very likely the guitar has had a hard bang on the top of the headstock.

You need to take it back and get a new one under warranty, I'm afraid. There should be no compromise when you own a Deluxe Strat.

Cheers - C

I agree with Ceri. its hard to see in the picture, but it looks a lot like a buddies' old Squire Bullet after he dropped it on the headstock, back in like '89 or '90. Although he had that guitar for a long time, still might as far as I know, and never developed a major problem, the fact is it seems to indicate some damage, which may become a major problem down the road.

It seems its only over the polyurethane finish, there is no crack in the wood, is this enough? i live outside of USA so i will have to ship it, by the way the serial says Z4 so i called Fender and they told me it was made in 2005, so it has different tuners, should i order a z8? or maybe z9?
