What are the advantages of the different neck radius's?
Why not just one size produced by Fender?
Would a 12 be easer then a 9 to play?

The higher the number the flatter the neck radius. Flatter neck radii are easier to bend string and usually more comfortable for lead play. If you bend strings pretty often (blues, etc) on a more curved neck such as a 7.5" you can "fret out" (that's what the internet says, I have played numerous 7.5" necks and never experienced it myself). The more curvature in the radius of the neck the more comfortable rhythm and chord playing is. Floyd Rose and similar bridges are better suited for flatter necks due to the lack of adjustment range in bridge and saddle height. Then you can also get into neck shapes: V, C, U etc...

I think the neck shape and the radius combined can make a difference in playabilty (kind of like drinkability). I happen to like the V shaped 9.5 and even 7.5, I also have a large C shaped neck with a 12" radius. The later does tend to wear my hand down faster and have noticed that I stretch my fingers a bit more with some chords. But it really comes down to trying different ones out and seeing what is comfortable to you and your hands.

Hope that helps.

Hello Bananafingers,

Mostly I'm just a strummer and
my strats all have 9.5"R which I'm
happy with, but, I do believe I can
play a bit cleaner {lead}with a 12"R.

My thoughts.

Cheers.

My Squier Strat has a 12 radius and I love it. Even better than the 9.5 on my Fender.

Different roundness to the fretboard. Personal preference. Keep in mind, nothing is every "better" across the board for everyone.

Different people like different things, and different fretboards are made for different peoples' preferences.

The neck shapes are similar preferences (D, C, U, V, etc). Play a ton and see which you like best.

Have a '57 Thin Skin w/V-neck 7.25" and SRV w/oval 12".

The V7 is more comfortable & I enjoy it more.
I never "fret out" on my 7.25", damn near impossible,
however, I do find it a bit easier playing notes and
bending above the 12th fret on the SRV w/ 12" - ez'er
to bend on a flatter surface I guess. I thought
playing the vintage neck would make me a better
player . . .not.

Just to confuse you more banana you can buy necks that are a Compound Radius of 10-16 the 10 giving you that nice rhythm play and 16 at the heel giving you that big bend lead

ok,,, I got more to learn here about necks. Not knowing about any other brand of guitars, for instance, do Gibson and "others" have options available to their guitars, as Fender has to theirs, different necks, pick gurads, hardware est.?

Most companies have no choice on their necks. They make only one or they will only have one available on a specific model.

Newer Gibsons have 2 (now 3) necks.

50s Rounded - Chunky C-Chaped
60s Slim Taper - Thinner almost a D shape (Common on SGs)
In 2008 they added the Assymetrical neck.

Then of course there is the Vintage stuff and the Reissues.

As far as I know all Gibbys are 12" Radius FB though.
