Hi folks. Just looking for the advice/experience of all you guitar players out there. I am planning to replace the pickups in my standard strat (Mexican). I have one Gold Lace which is going to be in the middle position, am planning another for the neck position. My problem lies in what to put in the bridge position - red lace? I have heard some say these are quite harsh. Does anyone have experience of the sound of a red or blue lace sensor in the bridge position of a strat? Seymour Duncan Hotrails or coolrails? Am looking for a slightly warmer less harsh, but thick, tone - think Richie Sambora or something like that.

Thanks folks

Mark

I put a Dimarzio FastTrack on a korean Strat and it sounds good, I also had a Seymour Duncan HotRails that I put on a Gibson Nighthawk (it had a tilted humbucker and then only thing that would fit in there is a single coil sized bucker)

They are both versatile pickups with moderate output, nothing spectacular or out of the ordinary, but they did the job very well.

I would personnally suggest one of these over a Lace... if you want a very versatile strat that can produce a wide range of tones. However, you may have some output issues mixing that kind of pickups together, just try it and see...

As for the blue lace, I do have one on the neck position of a Squier super sonic, I can't say I was impressed by it, not bad, not awsome, and probably not what you're looking for...

Hope that helps!

I have both hot rails and cool rails in a guitar. The cool rails would give you more of the warmer thicker tone than the hot rails but both are good pickups. I use 250k pots on these also. Warms them up a bit more.

Sambora uses humbucker equipped guitars. Humbuckers are not to be confused with hum cancelling single coils as they don't sound anything alike. You are simply not going to get a Sambora-like tone out of a SSS Strat no matter what pups you use. Do some internet research on what guitars and pickups he uses. A study of his rig wouldn't hurt either if you want to emulate his sound. I'm pretty sure I saw a pic of him playing what looked like a Ritchie Blackmore Strat with a bridge bucker installed. That might be a good place to start.

I have my main strat equipped with ...

Bridge - Seymour Duncan JB Jr (single sized humbucker)
Middle - Silver Lace
Neck - Blue Lace

I play a lot of different styles, record and perform, all that. This, for me, is a very good sounding, very versatile set up. I can get very close to classic strat sound (dead on for most people's ears), but have less noise, and a much thicker tone on the bridge. I also have that bridge split with a volume fader, so I can get full humbucker, single coil, and a lot in between.

One note: Even with a single sized humbucker, you'll get some great thick tones, but in the single coil mode, it won't sound exactly like an actual strat single coil pickup. It's close, but sounds thinner and lower in volume - at least mine does.

I've played around with different combos over the years, and this works for me the best. I can get some great tones: blues, rock, metal, jazz, country - between that guitar and my mesa boogie rectoverb.
