Hey Everyone, to start off with, I'll just say that I've just started playing guitar, as I got a Squier Strat (YAY!) for Christmas.

My question is this: After I develop my playing skills, (to about an intermediate level) should I consider getting an original Strat, or should I stick with my Squier (which is still awesome anyway)?

Thanks loads guys. :D

A good guitar is a good guitar. I'd stick with it as long as you're happy with it and it works for you.

Exactly correct. Any limitations of your current guitar will become obvious to you as you get more profecient. In my opinion, all a beginner really needs is a reasonably playable guitar that can stay in tune. After that, everything else is gravy. The rest is your desire to play.

Just my opinion.

That's your choice. If all ok with the Squier keep it. Over the years with more knowledge you will get more interest in more expensiver gear, it comes automaticly.

Cheers :D

I'm compulsive about upgrading components regardless of what the guitar is. I almost always at least upgrade pickups, my MIA Strat has 3 DiMarzio Humbuckers and my Highway 1 Tele has Duncans.

If the neck on your Squier feels good, I'd keep it and upgrade the electronics when you're ready for a change.

Maybe go with graphtek saddles and locking tuners too

Earvana nut?

Modding is fun

Then get a "Your Name" signature series waterslide decal made fpr the headstock.

TOO COOL

Keep the Squier. Play the crap out of it for a year or so. Like hours at a time. MAKE it sound good with the way you hold the strings, the way you pick it.

Take time to get what sounds like a good tone to you. If you're strumming chords, try strumming lighter, then heavier, etc - until it sounds the best to you.

If you're playing some single notes, change the way you pick it, harder, lighter, closer to bridge, closer to neck, with the pick at 90 degree angle to strings, then tilted a bit - and try everything in between until YOU like the way it sounds.

It's better to play just a few things very well, sounding great and feeling good, than to play a tons of garbage.

Once you're comfortable with your playing, and can get a good tone from your Squier, then you may want to look at an MIM or MIA. The good things is, at that point, you'll appreciate the difference much more.

My first guitar was a Squier Strat, and several years afterwards I got a Fender Strat. I still play them both, and I think my Squier is well worth keeping. I've upgraded the pickups in both of them, so now they sound on par with more expensive American Strats.

Nothing is stopping you from keeping the Squire AND getting a new guitar!!

I have every guitar I have ever owned, except one that was stolen : (

Play the crap out of it. My Squire lasted me 10 years before the neck broke. I loved that guitar so much I put a Warmoth neck on it. Then 5 years later I decided I just had to have an ESP LTD I saw in the store and traded it in on the ESP. If I could go back in time, I would stop myself.

Honestly...If you like it, keep it forever. This is the reason many guitar players have several guitars. They love the ones they have and still want more. The term is GAS (Guitar Aquisition Syndrome). It's all over this forum in one form or another.
