I think the problem with ther germanium fuzz face is that no two would sound alike and you had to try a few even new in store to find one that would suit.

Not necessarily. I mentioned earlier that I have the Analogman Sun Face NKT-275 pedal. I also own a Foxrox Captain Coconut 2 with various fuzz cards and one of them is the Analogman Germanium NKT-275 card which is the same circuit and same transistors as the Sun Face NKT-275. Even with a different power supply (9V battery vs. 9V AC adaptor), they sound and feel identical to me - and I'm ridiculously picky when it comes to fuzz.

Analogman does some pretty intensive screening of the fuzz transistors so, while transistors do vary, they seem to do an excellent job of building their pedals consistently.

I think I might just go to GC on 14th and try all the stock fuzz they have then maybe make an educated decision.

Or should I buy one of each? :)

Seriously, id go with a diy kit. Fuzz circuits are a doddle to wire.

I'll look into that too, would be cool to have something unique that you wired yourself.

I got an Arbiter Fuzz face pedal the other day, I like it a lot. It's making me work a lot more with my amp to find tones, which is a bonus. The Dunlop link is way cool, that swollen pickle looks very smart.

The Big Muffs are good for the $$$...Fulltone's '70 pedal puts out a good sound, but is somewhat temperamental, and Voodoo Lab's Super Fuzz is also very good, though their switches sometimes aren't really strong. Avoid the BOSS fuzz (I say that as someone who uses their pedals, albeit modified). Keeley is always worth a look too.

Check out Boss.com. You can listen to the different pedals they offer.

I have a Dunlop JH2S Jimi Hendrix System Classic Fuzz, and it does everything I want a fuzz pedal to do, plus it's the size of a Phase 90!

...only problem is, they're discontinued.

I have heard good things about the new aqua green MXR Classic 108 Fuzz pedal, but have yet to try it out. It's supposed to be a Fuzz Face with a few modern amenities (pedalboard friendly shape, buffer circuit to prevent after-wah oscillation)...a friend of mine bought one, but I haven't heard it in person yet.
