Alright, I am looking for a Fuzz pedal. You guessed right.

What is the deal with the prices on Fuzz? Is there a way to get something good without spending over 100 USD?

I guess I am looking for those who are using or have used Fuzz, so many to choose from.

It depends on what sort of sound you're looking for. If you're into the Hendrix thing, you'll want something based on the Fuzz Face which has two transistors; Jimi used one with germanium transistors early on then switched to one with silicon transistors around Band of Gypsies. Germanium is a little darker and smoother sounding and silicon tends to be brighter. I've never tried one out, but the Dunlop Fuzz Face reissue appears to be selling for around $100.

If you're after a thicker sound, the Electro Harmonix Big Muff (several models) feature three transistors (probably silicon) and sell for around $60 and up.

The Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face with the germanium are priced out of this world though. How does the Dunlop reissue model sounds next to it?

Or am I better going with a Muff from Electro Harmonix, I'm looking for that 70's fuzz sound, you know, the one before the overdrive pedals became the trend.

Yeah, those are probably the most popular fuzzes. They're many other fuzz pedals also. I got the fuzz face and I like it. You should try out many fuzz pedals and see the one you like and get it.

Wish there was more sound samples out there. But I guess they always can make any product sound good through the right amp. I was looking through ebay for the most popular dunlop and electro harmonix but there are actually many other manufacturers out there, like BBE, Analogman, MXR, Voodoo Lab, etc...

I'll second that. I have several different Fuzz Face clones from different builders and with different transistors and they all sound different, some more in more subtle ways than others.

If cost wasn't a factor, I'd highly recommend the Analogman Sun Face NKT-275 for it's smooth response, quiet operation (well, quiet for a fuzz...) and build quality.

That's a particular problem when shopping for a fuzz. They tend to sound like $@! through a clean amp and really shine through an overdriven amp. Best to try one out with your own setup so I recommend buying them from a retailer with a good return policy.

That's the other thing. I play through a tube amp with a TS9 I modded with a JRC chip. I do not like to use the gain on that amp so the TS9 is always on. Would I get good result from a Fuzz using the clean channel and the TS9?

Probably not. I've tried doing the same thing with a different overdrive pedal and a clean amp I use for practice at home and it definitely isn't the same thing as at least whacking the preamp of a master volume amp. In comparison, I found that the sound was relatively thin with just the overdrive. But, that's not to say that definitely you won't have different results with the Tube Screamer or that you wouldn't like the way it sounds either way.

The analog man fuzz face clone is BY FAR the best on the market right now. It's not cheap though- also check out the Fender Blender, that's a very cool pedal.

I'll just give it a try, hopefully find a sound I like out of it. Dunlop reissue sounds more my type. Know any mods out there for those?

Fender Blender is cool too, not many for sale though. How's the reissue next to the vintage?
