I was looking at my strats and noticed that there is a slight gap between the end of the neck/fingerboard (underneath) and the body on my EC strat as if it was supposed to have a 3-ply pickguard instead of the single-ply that it comes with. The neck feels solid and there is no movement. My JV strat is also a singly-ply but does not have this gap. Is this normal for this guitar?

Hi lafromla1. I think it is just explained by variations in machine work, even in this modern CNC age. It's a one piece neck, so the tongue for the 22nd fret is produced by routing the underneath of the neck's heel back from the tip of the tongue to fit the neck pocket on the body.

Now, for all the photos of the factory I've studied I don't recall seeing one of that particular cut taking place. So it may well still be done by a guy with a plunge router (or similar), rather than on a CNC machine. If so, he may simply have the router set to a slightly different depth one day than another.

Or maybe to that stage in production the neck is made with generic jigs and must be able to fit 1 or 3-ply pickguards. Perhaps the elements that turn it into a Clapton neck only occur further down the line.

In any case, within a small margin I've seen plenty of variation in that gap above the pickguard on American Strats. I'm sure you have nothing to worry about - and of course it has no effect on how the instrument plays.

Cheers - C
