i adjusted my truss a few weeks back but am getting a little buzz from the low e string.

it has gotten very cold here in the last month so im guessing the change in climate for the winter has affected the guitar.

anyway, how do i know if i should raise the saddle, or adjust the truss in order to remove the buzz.

its on the low e string when i fret from the 7/8 fret onwards.

First make sure it's not just the string,, sumtimes a string will get an indent from a fret and buzz.

LOL I've been playing guitar for 40 years and never heard that one. I guess you learn something new every day. Just raise the saddle a little. If it only effects one string It may just be string height.

Hi schmintan. You don't say in which direction you adjusted the rod. However, if the string is buzzing on the higher section of the neck when fretted then it is unlikely to be a trussrod issue. That would appear to be confirmed if it is only one string giving the problem. The saddle height is likely your solution.

However, to be absolutely sure I'd want to run through a standard setup following the logical sequence. Given that your guitar is playing almost right it would only take a few minutes to do that, since there's probably not much that actually needs adjusting.

Then you'll know for sure.

Cheers - C

just out of curosity, what are the logical steps in a standard setup?

what i generally do is:

Fit new strings.
Tune.
Check string height. if i fret the 1st and 12th string and can just fit a playing card under the string at the 7th fret, the truss is ok.

if after the playing card test the string is too high i lower it until i get buzz, then i highten it a tiny bit until the buzz disappears.

intonate.

to answer your question, i adjusted the neck by losening the truss, as the neck was too straight. couldnt fit a playing card under the double fretted string at the 7th fret. i really have to get a set of feeler gagues!

ive done some measurements again, and when the low e string is fretted on the 1st and last fret, the string moves ever so slightly when sliding a playing card under it at the 8th fret( 8fret is whats stated in the handbook that came with the guitar).

so i losened the truss by roughly( or a bit less than) 1/8 of a turn.

the buzz is gone now.

im concerned with string height though. the low e string, unfretted is 2.5/32 ( roughly 1.5mm) of an inch above the 12th fret.

my ibanez has a much lower action than that. am i asking for too much from a fender? i know ibanez are designed to have super low action, but perhaps the fender is not capiable of this action and i should just live with it.

EDIT: the fender handbok states string height unfretted from 17th fret on the low e string should be around 2.5mm. I have mine currently at 1.75mm ( a whisker above 2/32 inch). that seems pretty standard, from my research on the web.

am i correct in this assumption?

Your action is good. I have mine set to about 1.8mm treble strings and 2mm base strings. Any lower and I get buzz.
