MAN OH MAN. I don't get the whole relic'd and aging thing. I don't want to pay more for a guitar that some dude sat around and sanded on. My 74 Tele looks like crap but its the thousands of beers that have been spilled and all the smoke that got it that way. But for the most part I try to keep em looking like the day I bought it.

Play it and rock on.

that worn finish looks like it tells a story as it DOES tell a story, about how the owner has used the guitar, not abusing it but using it to its full potential for many years and is as comfortable with the instrument as with their own arm.

buying an aged guitar or doing it yourself also tells a story, it says that i have a new guitar and i stripped the paint off it and gave it a few dings, but its not authentic.

if your guitar is in good nick after 15 years, that tells as much of a story and is as much authentic as a used and abused looking guitar. be happy with what your guitar is.

You can actually get decent results by strategically hand sanding the finish off the body. I personally dislike "hand relic'd" guitars but I've done a few for friends. It's work to make it look right.

Use light grit sand paper (I like sanding sponges myself because they follow the body contours) and take off a layer at a time. Don't use coarse grit because it scratches the wood and surrounding finish and it's obvious that it was sanded. Work carefully and feather the edges. Finish up with varying degrees of fine steel woll and you get a nice smoothed out worn look.

Also, remember that some people's sweat is fairly acidic and will wear off the finish quicker...this is due to your own body chemistry, diet, etc.

Chan Ginchla (I am probably spelling his name wrong) of Blues Traveler used to use graphite necks because his sweat wears off the finish so quickly.

As far is getting it old-looking, just play the dang thing!
