Interesting, thanks for the replies, guys.

I'm sure you're all right, though I must say it makes no sense to me, apart from playing chords near the nut like Niki said. If the idea of scalloping is to stop your fingertip touching the fretboard while you play then surely you need deeper scallops towards the nut, not the other way around?

(Mentioned it before) I have an old neck with big gouges out of it where my fingers have gone up to the eighth or nineth fret and most of all near the nut. But I certainly can't make finger contact with 'board up near the dusty end, so presumably no need for scalloping up there?

Yet I've seen someone - Steve Vai, was it? - who has the neck scalloped only up at the top end. Seems very odd to me, but there you are...

We've tossed this scalloping thing around many times on the Forum, and I still don't feel I fully get it.

Cheers - C

PS Troublecall, I think your line was even worse than mine!

Yes, Steve Vai has scalloped frets from the 20th up to the 24th to increase sustain on the high notes, anyone who is familiar with his material knows he favours the very high notes on the guitar and likes to use a lot of notes up in that range.

The only problem with scallops is that too much can prevent you from bending the notes too much, however I don't think that the Blackmore Strat has that because Ritchie Blackmore does a lot of bends in his songs and I doubt Fender would create a guitar as a sig model and make it not playable for his tunes.

Finally, it's cleared up! Thanks, man!

Listen to some of fellow forum member smark's clips in the pickup area. He has several scalloped-neck gitboxes.

Finally, a new Blackmore Signature Strat! If any Strat playing artist deserves to have a signature Strat, it is Ritchie Blackmore.
While a number of good points of debate have been made about the "Blackmore style" scalloping - it comes down to actually playing a Stratocaster with this feature. In my experience, one plays more relaxed, and it is easier to hold down both lead and rhythm parts in performance with this style of scalloped fretboard.
I can not wait to order one! And Fender, if you are observing; how about a Custom Shop Ritchie Blackmore Signature Strat to honor one of the most under rated, living legends of our time?

They already did that with a limited series some years ago. I would have to dig out my Fender catalogs to find out when that was. But I think you can find them out on the web ...

oh, here is one from 1997:

This sure looks similar to the "new" one, except this is MIJ as opposed to MIM.

My guitar hero from the past is getting old...
I am surprised he's still active. But he's young wife is a mint, obviously taking influence on him to be younger as he is... Sweet bird of youth!

Yes, partially.

I have read that the scalloping is deeper at the High E side of the fingerboard than the Low E side. I have never held one to verify this, however.

Yes thats how the partial scalloping works. It's deepest at the high end strings, where the majority of your hammer ons and pull offs occur, and almost unnoticeable at the low end strings.

This is the one I've been waiting for Fender to make. It's about time. An Alder body to boot! (not Basswood) I've got several scalloped necked guitars, but this is the one I've always wanted since seeing Deep Purple in 1972. Only problem is that no one has them. Elderly can order one, but I'd sure like to test drive one first.
