i have started using my strat again. just a standard agave blue mexican. there are going to be al ot of mods done to it. a wilkinson bridge, locking tuners, new pots, new wiring, new pickguard and cavity cover, shielding ,everything (mainly cos the hardware and plastics are going black)... including the pickups. im staying in the single coil route, cos even though i play metal and hard rock (with heavy blues influences... im also getting into classical finger style), i still like them better. much more clarity and crispness.

i dont need a LOT of gain. about 8-10k will do. i have the stock 6k pickup in it and its very crunchy, even through a blues junior. im going to be using a valve junior head that i recently purchased thats modded like a marshall plexi through a greenback and will be my main amp. so keep that in mind. i need less treble then my current pickup though, when the BJR is cranked i need to drop the treble so low its not funny. i can spend MAXIMUM $70 on each pickup.

right now im considering Seymour Duncan SSL-3, SSL-1, SSL-1. but i want more ideas. im not a very good reaseacher when it comes to pickups.

thanks!

You have a Plexi running through 25w GreenBacks? You have the rig for sure. I'm jealous. That is the exact rig I plan to put together for myself in the near future.

I have played through similar rigs to yours on many occasions. The rig sounded great with a Strat wired with DiMarzio YJM's Neck & Middle and DiMarzio HS3 in the bridge.

The only Strat I have with "Real" single coils (not stacked or active) is my 50th Anniversary which has the '54 Custom Shop Pick Ups. It definitely has that classic Strat Twang.

I have friends who have been very happy with both the Fender "Texas Specials" and/or the "'57/'62's" pick up sets for more of a rock/blues sounding set-up.

Good luck.

thanks.

anyone else have any suggestions? i was looking mainly at aftermarket pickups, and if i dont get aftermarkets, ill get the texas specials, since theyre chunky and big. i want mid punchy and bassy pickups, to balance out the amp, but the problem is my VJ is bassy too. does anyone have any suggestions to balace out both the amps?

eric clapton, ac/dc, pantera, paul gibert, megadeth and the sword.

i know that all but one use single coils, but i can sound heavy without lots of gain.
