Right. This doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to me.

I agree... get a American for actually the same if not a little less, depending on how good of a hagler you are with the sales person. I mean those Road Worn guitars are made in Mexico! Believe me nothing against MIM guitars, I have one and think they are great! But the whole point of being made in Mexico is to save money. Since the cost to produce them in Mexico is alot cheaper than in the U.S. Anyway if you like that worn look, do it yourself. Thats the whole point, it would be worn in with your style of playing, knowing where all the dings scraps and buckle marks came from is the what makes having a personlize worn guitar is alot about. If someone asks you " wow what happend to that guitar?" What would be cooler... " I bought it that way new" or " yeah! it got that ding one night when I was really laying down some blistering licks with my buddies at a gig we were playing, and that fret wear near the 3 and 4th frets are from where I usually play most of my strings bends during my SRV licks ..etc
Anyway... enough of me rambling. But I personally like to break in a guitar myself and know where it came from. Not some worker whose job it is to beat the thing up intentionally charge youmore than a new model. Oh and one last thing.....Keep Rockin!!!

since 2006 to present the MIM standard strats craftmanship
are on the same level as the american made strats. same machines are used to cut and it also the same wood. so i can see why they are just
as much as the MIA strats.

1) A big factor here is also that only with the MIA do you get a HSC, too.
2) For me, personally, I am also not a big fan of the relic look. I like my guitars to look brand new as much as reasonably possible. I am old school, I guess.
3) It is nice to see a platform that features my Tex Mex pickups. I really like mine alot. They deserve the love.
4) Isn't the talk around the campfire that MIA Stds will have a price increase in Feb? That will make the price disparity much more noticable and more of a factor.

I disagree. The build quality may be there, but the finish and little things on the AM STD are superior. also, the cuts of wood are not as good. If you go to a guitar store like GC, you can tell the difference by looking at them. The finish is just not as deep and glossy on the MIM, the necks are not as quality of a piece of wood. Also, the keyhole for the truss rod is walnut wood on the headstock on the MIA. THe MIM has some kind of composite that looks cheap. The handrolled fingerboard edges make playability more comfortable on the MIA. Then the electronics are better in the MIA.

The MIM is a true value though, and great for its price point. But the MIA is a true professional quality instrument imho.

Actually I'd go for the 60s Road Worn Strat above the American Standard. My reasons for that are:
1. I wouldn't be afraid to use it and I could beat it up with no worries.
2. I like the look and I don't have the time or the talent to make a shiny new MIM strat look like that.
3. I like the Tex-Mex pickups, I'd have to spend an extra $100 or $200 upgrading the pickups on the American Standard. So I'd actually save that $100 or $200 by getting the guitar with the pickups I already like.
4. Even though it may have only faked character when it's new, it like all other guitars would eventually develop real character. And since it's already beat up it would actually encourage me to do some character building on it.

Aside from a pickup upgrade i can see no reason to not go for the Am Std. As much as i love mexican guitars and will defend their honour i'd just rather have an American strat.

Although the MIMs are very good, especially for the money, and on par with the MIJ's in the 80's, in my opinion they are nowhere near as good as the MIA for too many reasons to list - all of which I can tell, can appreciate and will pay the extra for.

Regarding the main question though, I'd rather have the MIA, but it's close. A good quality MIM that has that vintage look and feel is a nice guitar. I'd just rather have the MIA myself.

But since I have a few good MIA's, I wouldn't mind that sweet olympic white/rosewood road worn strat :)

In the American Standard you're paying for parts upgrades. In a relic'd guitar you are paying for the "road wear". And, as with a new car, after the first scratch, who cares? At least you put the dings in yourself.
I have an American Standard and I love it. You will too. And over time you will come to appreciate the subtle differences in it over the "roadie".

Love,
Todd

For resale value the MIA will always be worth more. If you really want a relic and cant afford the custom shop prices then it's a no brainer.
